Days saved to shortlist
Add a daily vacancy cost to price the 5 days saved. A $100,000 role at a 2x revenue multiple costs $769 a day.
How the numbers work
- Hours today = 120 x (30 + 15) / 60 = 90 hrs
- Hours with AI = 120 x 5 / 60 = 10 hrs
- Value = 80 hrs x $45 = $3,600 a month
- Vacancy value = 5 days x $0 x 10 roles = $0 a month
Tool cost is not included. Skillora prices by the interviews you run, so the quote depends on your volume.

First-round interviews are the most expensive hour in recruiting that nobody puts in a budget. This recruiting ROI calculator puts it in one. Enter how many people you hire a month, how many candidates you interview live for each role, and what an hour of recruiter time costs. It returns the hours your team spends on first rounds today, the hours left when an AI interviewer runs them, and what the difference is worth in dollars and in recruiter headcount.
The defaults describe a team hiring 10 people a month. That team runs 120 first-round interviews. At 30 minutes per interview plus 15 minutes of scheduling, those interviews take 90 hrs a month, or $48,600 a year at $45 an hour. When candidates take a live AI interview the day they apply and the recruiter reads a 5-minute scored report instead, the same pipeline takes 10 hrs.
The second half measures speed. A candidate who waits a week for a first-round slot often takes another offer. Shortlisting 5 days sooner on every role is worth real money when an empty seat costs you every day, and the calculator prices those days if you enter a daily vacancy cost. Every figure comes from inputs you control. Change one and the result, the formula, and the emailed PDF change with it.
How the recruiting ROI math works
Six formulas, no hidden weights. The calculator shows each one with your numbers under the result.
First-round interviews per month
roles hired per month x first-round interviews per role
Recruiter hours today
interviews x (interview minutes + scheduling minutes) / 60
Recruiter hours with AI first rounds
interviews x report review minutes / 60
Value of time saved
(hours today - hours with AI) x fully loaded hourly cost
Recruiters freed
hours saved per month / 140
Vacancy value of faster shortlists
days saved x daily vacancy cost x roles per month
The default assumptions, and when to change them
$45 an hour for recruiter time
The same default as the time to hire calculator. It is a $70,000 recruiter with a 30% burden over 2,000 working hours. Use your own figure if you know it; agency owners should count what a desk bills, not what it costs.
30 minutes per live first round
Most first-round interviews run 20 to 45 minutes. Count the call itself plus the notes written after it, because the notes are part of the job.
15 minutes of scheduling per interview
Invites, time zones, reschedules, and the no-show who needs a second slot. Fifteen minutes is conservative for teams that schedule by email.
5 minutes to review an AI interview
Reading the scores, the evidence behind them, and the key moments in the transcript. Raise it if your team listens to every answer in full.
140 productive hours per recruiter per month
A 160-hour month minus team meetings, admin, and reporting. The recruiters-freed figure divides hours saved by this number.
7 days to a first round today, 2 with AI
A recruiter calendar books first rounds days out. An on-demand AI interview runs when the candidate applies, so the wait is however long the candidate takes to click the link.
Worked examples for three team sizes
Same defaults for every row: 30-minute interviews, 15 minutes of scheduling, a 5-minute report review, and $45 an hour.
| Team | Interviews a month | Hours today | Hours with AI | Value a year | Recruiters freed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small team or agency desk4 hires a month, 10 first rounds each | 40 | 30 hrs | 3.3 hrs | $14,400 | 0.19 |
| Mid-size recruiting team15 hires a month, 12 first rounds each | 180 | 135 hrs | 15 hrs | $64,800 | 0.86 |
| High-volume hiring40 hires a month, 25 first rounds each | 1000 | 750 hrs | 83 hrs | $360,000 | 4.76 |
Add vacancy cost and the numbers grow fast. At $769 a day for a $100,000 role, shortlisting 5 days sooner on 10 roles a month is worth $38,450 a month, if the later stages keep pace.
Where first-round time goes
The interview is the visible part. Scheduling, checking claims, and waiting on debriefs are where the hours hide.
38%
Scheduling eats more than a third of the week
GoodTime's survey of more than 500 talent acquisition leaders, reported by HR Dive, found scheduling takes 38% of recruiter time. Every first-round interview needs a slot, and every reschedule needs another. The scheduling-minutes input is where this cost lives, and it drops to zero when candidates interview on demand.

67%
Checking one candidate takes an hour or more
In TestGorilla's October 2026 survey, 67% of recruiters said they spend an hour or more checking a single candidate, and 57% named verifying claimed skills a top sourcing problem. A structured first round answers the same questions for every candidate, so the check happens inside the interview rather than after it.

59%
Debriefs take two working days or more
Phenom and Talent Board found 59% of recruiters and hiring managers say debriefs take two or more working days. A scored report with evidence shortens the conversation, because the debrief starts from the same facts. The calculator does not price this; it shows up as days saved if you set them.

What this calculator leaves out
An ROI number that ignores its own blind spots is a sales pitch. These are ours.
Tool cost
Skillora prices by the interviews you run and publishes no per-interview rate. Get a quote for your volume and subtract it from the value of time saved. That remainder is the return.
Quality of hire
The calculator counts hours, not outcomes. A structured first round, where every candidate answers the same questions and is scored on the same rubric, gives hiring managers comparable evidence. That is worth something, but no honest formula prices it.
Candidate experience
Some candidates prefer a person on the first call. Others prefer interviewing at 10 p.m. without waiting a week for a slot. Neither preference is in the math.
Later rounds
Hiring manager rounds, panels, references, and offers stay as they are. The calculator touches the first round only.
What the freed hours become
Saved time is only money if it goes somewhere: more requisitions per recruiter, more sourcing, faster closes, or more client submittals on an agency desk. If the hours vanish into meetings, the return does too.
Skillora is a direct alternative to HireVue for structured, scored interviews at scale: 24/7, proctored, connected to your ATS. The difference is the format. A candidate talks to an AI interviewer that asks follow-up questions when an answer is thin, instead of recording answers to a fixed list. Skillora is not an ATS; it runs the interview and sends the scores back to the one you use.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- How do you calculate recruiting ROI for AI interviews?
- Multiply roles hired per month by first-round interviews per role. Multiply that by the minutes each interview and its scheduling take, then divide by 60 for hours today. Do the same with the minutes a recruiter spends reviewing an AI interview report. The difference is hours saved; multiply it by your recruiter's fully loaded hourly cost for the dollar value. With the defaults, 120 interviews a month drop from 90 hrs to 10 hrs.
- What is a fully loaded recruiter cost?
- Salary plus benefits, payroll taxes, and overhead, divided by the hours a recruiter works. A recruiter paid $70,000 with a 30% burden over 2,000 hours costs about $45 an hour, which is the default here. Agency desks on commission often run higher once you count the placements the hours could have produced.
- How much recruiter time do AI interviews save?
- It depends on how long your first rounds and scheduling take. With 30-minute interviews, 15 minutes of scheduling, and a 5-minute report review, the saving is 89% of first-round time. Teams that re-watch recordings or take longer to review save less. Enter your own minutes and the calculator shows your number.
- Does the calculator include the cost of Skillora?
- No. Skillora prices by the interviews you run, with pay-as-you-go or custom monthly and annual plans, and has no public per-interview rate. The calculator shows the value of the time saved. Ask for a quote, subtract it, and the remainder is your return.
- What counts as a first-round interview?
- The first live conversation a candidate has with your team, usually 20 to 45 minutes with a recruiter, covering background, motivation, must-have skills, and logistics. Later rounds with the hiring manager are not part of this calculation.
- Do AI interviews decide who gets hired?
- No. Skillora runs the first-round interview, asks follow-up questions, and scores every candidate on the same rubric. A recruiter reads the report and decides who moves forward. That review is the time the calculator counts on the AI side.
