Mercor is a San Francisco talent marketplace that places domain experts on contract work for frontier AI labs. The labs need doctors, lawyers, bankers, engineers, scientists and writers to produce and grade the material their models learn from. Mercor screens once, upfront, with a roughly 20-minute AI interview. It asks about your background, then pushes into how you reason inside your own field. The recording and transcript are scored and attached to your profile, and every project match reads from that score.

Mercor caps retakes at three, shared across every application, and evaluates only your most recent attempt, so a rushed retake overwrites a good score. How does the Mercor AI interview work?

It is about 20 minutes with an AI interviewer, recorded. Expect background questions first, then role-specific reasoning: a clinical scenario for physicians, a design discussion for engineers, a deal or accounting question for finance. Your answers are transcribed and scored, and that score drives which projects you are matched to. You can retake it, but prepare before the first attempt rather than after.

Do I need AI experience to work for Mercor?

No. Mercor exists to move expertise into models that the models do not have, so it hires practitioners: the lawyer, the cardiologist, the staff engineer.
