About this role

Role Title: Software Engineer

Role Type: Contractor

Location: Remote

micro1 is engaging Software Engineers to participate in a project focused on the evaluation of advanced AI system outputs. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required — your domain knowledge is what matters.

This engagement centers on critical analysis and evaluation, not software development or feature delivery. Contributors will assess AI-generated responses to technical prompts—such as documentation, error messages, code comments, architectural explanations, and instructions—by scoring, comparing, and providing detailed written rationales. The core challenge is determining whether a response is not only correct, but also clearly communicated, well-adapted to its intended audience, and genuinely helpful. Identifying subtle factual inaccuracies, misleading fluency, or misaligned tone is essential.

Scope of Work

  1. Evaluate and compare multiple AI-generated responses to technical prompts for clarity, correctness, tone, and usefulness.
  2. Assign analytical quality scores and compose detailed rationales justifying each assessment.
  3. Spot responses that are technically accurate but poorly communicated, or fluent but factually incorrect.
  4. Thoroughly document observations and findings with precision and consistency.
  5. Identify and articulate small errors, inconsistencies, or ambiguities in technical communication.
  6. Collaborate asynchronously with project managers and reviewers to ensure alignment on evaluation standards.
  7. Work independently to meet agreed-upon project requirements and deliverables within defined timeframes.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Native-level English fluency and exceptional written communication skills.
  2. Professional experience as a software engineer in any modern technology stack.
  3. Proven track record authoring or reviewing technical documentation, design docs, API references, or specs.
  4. Experience conducting code review, design review, or providing feedback on technical writing.
  5. Demonstrated ability to judge technical communication for audience appropriateness and instructional value.
  6. Strong analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  7. Familiarity with AI model evaluation, annotation, or RLHF projects is a plus but not required.
