Toptal accepts 3% of applicants, and then it decides what your client pays for you. You never see that number. Toptal's freelancer FAQ says it takes no cut from the rate you set. It does not say what it bills on top. One engineer on Hacker News, quitting Toptal in March 2025, said it bills the client double what the engineer gets.

That is the first reason senior engineers and finance experts look for Toptal alternatives. The second is the wait. You pass five stages over three to eight weeks, one of them an unpaid test project, and then nothing schedules your first client. The third is the rate. The same engineer said Toptal had cut their rate to a third of what they charged a few years earlier.

Almost every page ranking for "toptal alternatives" is written by an agency selling developers to companies, and most rank themselves first. This one is for the person being sold. It compares the vetted networks a senior developer, banker or former consultant would apply to, on three tests: who sets your rate, how hard the screen is, and how fast paid work arrives.

Two of them do not work like Toptal at all. micro1 and Mercor print an hourly rate on each listing and pay it for expert work that trains AI models. There is no client to pitch and no rate to negotiate. On 8 October 2026, micro1 had three senior tracks open, for software engineers, finance professionals and management consultants, each paying $245 to $280 an hour.

Disclosure: Skillora runs a live AI training jobs board and may earn a referral fee when someone is hired through our links to micro1 or Mercor. It costs you nothing. Those two lead this list because they are the only networks here where the rate on the listing is the rate you are paid, with nothing to pitch. Their weak points get the same treatment as everyone else's.

9 Toptal alternatives at a glance

  1. micro1. $245 to $280 an hour on its senior engineering, finance and consulting tracks. Rate set by micro1 and printed on the job. AI interview plus a proctored test.
  2. Mercor. Up to $210 an hour for senior engineers and $250 for finance experts. Rate printed on the job. AI interview, then a paid work trial on some contracts.
  3. Gun.io. Senior US developers, paid exactly the rate they ask for. Interview with senior staff engineers.
  4. A.Team. Senior product builders with seven or more years. You set the rate and keep it. You go after missions yourself.
  5. Arc.dev. Developers, 2.3% accepted by its own count. You set the rate; the markup is not published.
  6. Braintrust. No fee to talent. The client pays 15% on top. A growing share of listings are AI training work.
  7. Catalant. Independent consultants bidding on posted projects. Paid net 60.
  8. Paro. Finance and accounting experts, from FP&A to fractional CFO. You propose a rate and Paro approves it.
  9. GLG and the expert networks. Paid calls for bankers, investors and operators. Fast money, but most experts do not set their own rate.

Graphite would have been on this list for finance experts. Toptal bought it on 7 January 2026 and is folding its 12,000 finance and strategy experts into Toptal.

Is Toptal worth it in 2026?

It is worth it if you want long client engagements and can absorb a wait. It is not worth it if you need paid hours this month or want to know what your client is billed.

The case for Toptal is real. A developer who joined in 2023 landed a first engagement in under a week and stayed with one client for about two years. On Trustpilot, a June 2026 reviewer got a placement from two interviews inside three months, and a September 2026 reviewer counted 11 engagements in about three years. Toptal's own Q2 2026 market report says demand for experienced talent rose 8.9% year on year. That figure is self-reported.

The case against comes from the same people Toptal recruits:

  • Rates have been falling. A March 2025 Hacker News thread on where seasoned developers find short-term work had one Toptal veteran on a last engagement, their rate cut to a third of what it was. Another poster in the thread quit after being lowballed while living in Western Europe. A June 2024 commenter watched Toptal rates for machine learning gigs fall from $150 an hour to $60 in a year.
  • Clients bargain you down. On Blind's Toptal reviews, a senior SRE in April 2026 was placed within weeks but said clients push rates below the profile rate. A data architect in January 2026 said rates had declined over three years. A finance freelancer billing $200 an hour was asked to lower it, and says rates flex 10% to 30% to fit client budgets.
  • Work can stop. A May 2026 Blind reviewer took about three months to find a client. Another that month wrote that there are no jobs. An August 2026 reviewer said work can dry up and contracts end abruptly.
  • The company has shrunk and reshuffled. Toptal laid off about 70% of its engineering staff in October 2024, then spent 2026 buying Graphite, Adeva and QO Collective.

None of this is unique to Toptal. Brookings found that freelancers in work exposed to generative AI lost contracts and earnings, and experienced, higher-priced freelancers were hit hardest. The senior engineer selling code to clients is competing with the client's own Copilot. The AI labs, meanwhile, are paying that same engineer to make the models better.

The Toptal screening process, and how the alternatives screen

Toptal screening process: five stages from 26.4% to 3% of applicants over 3 to 8 weeks, including an unpaid test project
Toptal's own funnel. Each figure is the share of applicants still in.

Toptal publishes its funnel on its top 3% page. Each figure is the share of applicants still in after that stage.

  1. Language and personality: 26.4%. A video call with a recruiter about your English, how you communicate and whether a client would trust you.
  2. In-depth skill review: 7.4%. A timed algorithm test. Glassdoor reports from February and June 2026 describe a short timed test followed by a 30-minute live coding task, with no outside help allowed.
  3. Live screening: 3.6%. A domain expert from Toptal watches you solve problems.
  4. Test project: 3.2%. One to three weeks building something real, then a review call. It is unpaid.
  5. Continued excellence: 3%. Client ratings keep you in.

The whole process takes three to eight weeks by Toptal's own estimate. Fail a stage and Toptal's FAQ says it "typically" requires a waiting period before you try again, without saying how long. One engineer on Blind reported waiting six months after failing the live screen, and 18 months after failing the test project. A Hacker News critic argues the 3% is inflated by people who drop out early, and puts skill-based selectivity nearer 15% to 20%.

The alternatives screen in one of two ways.

Humans, like Toptal. Gun.io, Arc.dev, A.Team, Paro and Catalant all interview you with a person. Arc's technical interview runs about an hour. Gun.io puts you in front of senior staff engineers. None of them lists a multi-week unpaid project in its published process.

An AI interviewer. micro1, Mercor and Braintrust all start with an AI interview. micro1's Zara runs about 20 minutes, followed by a proctored assessment of 25 to 30 minutes. Mercor's interview is about 20 minutes and you get three attempts, pooled across every listing, with only the latest one scored. Its senior engineering listings add a short paid exercise, and some contracts add a paid work trial of four to six hours. You can be through either gate in an afternoon rather than a month.

Speed has a cost. An AI interview interrupts, scores your pacing and rarely gives feedback. If you have not been interviewed in years, run one scored mock interview before you spend an attempt that counts. The micro1 AI interview guide and the Mercor AI interview guide cover what each one scores.

How we ranked them

Three tests, in this order.

  1. Who sets your rate, and can you see it? A rate printed on the listing beats a rate you set and then defend. A rate you set and keep beats a markup you never see.
  2. How hard is the screen? Measured in hours of your time and the cost of failing, not the acceptance rate on the marketing page.
  3. How fast does paid work arrive? From first-hand reports where they exist. Most networks publish only the client-side figure, how fast a company can hire, which is a different number.

Rates for micro1 and Mercor come from Skillora's live feed, which pulls every listing from six AI training marketplaces with the rate each one published. On 8 October 2026 that was 1,274 listings, 337 of them on micro1 and 328 on Mercor. Rates for the other networks come from their own pages or, where they publish nothing, the best third-party figure we could find. We say which is which.

The 9 Toptal alternatives in detail

Toptal alternatives compared: micro1, Mercor, Gun.io, A.Team, Arc.dev, Braintrust, Catalant, Paro and GLG by who sets your rate, screening and senior hourly rate
Who sets your rate, how you are screened, and what senior people are paid.

1. micro1: $245 to $280 an hour, rate printed on the job

micro1 is a vetted network that pays experts to evaluate and improve AI models for frontier labs. You never pitch a client. Each listing names its rate, and micro1 places you on a project from its pool.

The three senior tracks are the reason micro1 is first here:

  • Senior Software Engineer: $245 to $280 an hour. You evaluate AI-generated code for correctness and design, write hard engineering problems with reference solutions and test cases, and review model reasoning on architecture, debugging and system design. micro1 prefers at least a year as an engineer at a top tech company, some of it within the past seven years, a degree from a top-ranked university, and a base in an English-speaking country.
  • Investment & Finance Expert: $245 to $280 an hour. For people from investment banking, private equity, venture capital, hedge funds or growth equity. You assess model outputs on valuation, modeling and markets, and write expert prompts and reference answers from real deal experience.
  • Management Consultant: $245 to $280 an hour. For alumni of McKinsey, Bain, BCG, Strategy&, L.E.K., Oliver Wyman or similar. You judge how models reason through business problems, using the frameworks you already know.

Below those sit the volume tracks. Two Software Engineer listings pay $30 to $100 and $50 to $100 an hour for about 15 hours a week, building realistic coding tasks with deterministic verifiers, or reinforcement learning environments with golden reference solutions. Neither states a location requirement, and none of micro1's 337 live listings is restricted by country. Engineers in India can apply to all of it. Across all of micro1, the typical listing pays $50 to $95, and 48% reach $100 an hour or more. Finance listings go higher: 14 of its 21 reach $100 or more, including equity research and investment banking experts at $175 to $300.

The screen. A live interview with Zara, micro1's AI recruiter, then a proctored assessment, then human review. The result arrives in real time.

How fast work arrives. This is micro1's weak point. Passing puts you in a pool, and nothing schedules your first project. The micro1 review covers the gap between certification and income, and why the odds are better here than elsewhere: micro1's revenue grew roughly seventy-five-fold in two years, so the pool is being drawn from harder.

Live listings: all micro1 jobs.

2. Mercor: up to $250 an hour, rate printed on the job

Mercor works the same way as micro1. It recruits experts for AI labs, prints the rate on each listing and pays weekly. Offers often come to you through its matching rather than through an application.

Its typical listing pays $60 to $90 an hour, against micro1's $50 to $95, and its ceiling is lower at $250. For senior engineers, a legacy codebase migration role posted in August 2026 pays $200 an hour, and the long-running Expert Senior SWE listing pays $150 to $210 for engineers based in the US or Europe with 10 or more years at top US tech firms. For finance, an equity research expert role posted in September 2026 pays $150 to $250 for 20 hours a week. For consultants, the Management Consultant Talent Network pays $100 to $150.

The catch is geography. 120 of Mercor's 328 live listings are restricted by country, 81 of them to the US alone. Finance is the most closed category: only 9 of its 28 finance listings are open outside named countries. Software engineering is more open, at 21 of 37.

The screen. An automated fit check, a 20-minute AI interview with three pooled attempts, then assessments. Its Expert Senior SWE listing adds a two-hour asynchronous exercise paid $100. Some contracts add a paid work trial, and you only get one of those per lifetime.

How fast work arrives. It is a lottery, and its own users say so. The Mercor alternatives roundup reads 30 Reddit threads, from a $140-an-hour contract that ran two months to 150 declined applications in a row. A senior engineer on Blind in July 2025 reported $40,000 in three months on one-to-two-month contracts at $150 to $210 an hour, and added that most contracts involve no actual coding. The post also carried referral links, so weigh it accordingly.

Live listings: all Mercor jobs. The full company picture, including the March 2026 breach, is in the Mercor review.

3. Gun.io: you are paid exactly what you ask

Gun.io is the closest thing to Toptal on this list, aimed at senior US developers. Its rate model is the cleanest: you set a rate and Gun.io pays you exactly that, with its fee built into the all-in price the client sees. Third-party estimates put senior developers at $110 to $145 an hour to the client, and technical leads at $145 to $200.

The screen. An experience screen, then an interview with senior staff engineers plus a work-style assessment. In 2022 it approved 962 of 16,611 sign-ups, about 6%. No unpaid test project and no AI interviewer.

How fast work arrives. Gun.io says clients hire in an average of 13 days. That is a client-side number. We found no recent first-hand report of how long an approved developer waits.

4. A.Team: you keep your rate and go hunting

A.Team takes senior product builders, engineers, designers and product managers with seven or more years of experience, and assembles them into teams for client missions. You set your rate and keep all of it. A.Team adds its fee on top. Its listings have shown roughly $110 to $190 an hour.

The screen. An interview, a review of sample work by a specialist, a communication interview, then vetting for each mission.

How fast work arrives. You have to request missions yourself. A.Team's own guide warns builders not to wait for outreach. That suits someone who treats it like sales and frustrates anyone who wanted Toptal's matchmaking without the wait.

5. Arc.dev: 2.3% accepted, markup unpublished

Arc.dev is a developer network that says it accepts 2.3% of applicants. You set your rate. Arc does not publish its markup, which puts it in the same position as Toptal on our first test.

The screen. A profile review, an English and communication check, then a technical interview or pair-programming session of about an hour with an expert. No unpaid project.

How fast work arrives. Arc advertises freelance hires in as little as 72 hours, again a client-side figure. We found no first-hand freelancer timing.

6. Braintrust: no fee to you, and a thinner marketplace than it was

Braintrust charges talent nothing. Its payments page says "Zero fees. Ever." Clients pay 15% on top. A growing share of its listings are AI training work, through its AI training track, which pays $20 to $200 an hour weekly after a profile and an AI skills interview. Whether Braintrust is legit is a question people ask often enough that it gets its own section below.

How fast work arrives. Slowly, by most accounts. A June 2026 review quotes a Glassdoor reviewer who said onboarding took months. Its Trustpilot reviews describe screening videos with no feedback and, in September 2026, an applicant onboarded to a lower-paid project than the one they applied for.

7. Catalant: consulting projects you bid for

Catalant is a marketplace for independent consultants. Companies post projects and you bid. The client pays Catalant a fee on top, reported at 20% to 30%, and third parties estimate consultant rates at $150 to $450 an hour.

The screen. An application and profile review. The real screen is the bid. Popular projects draw 20 or more proposals within hours.

How fast work arrives. As fast as you win a bid, and payment then runs net 60 through Payoneer. Business Talent Group is the alternative for full-time independents and interim executives. It has been owned by Heidrick & Struggles since 2021 and publishes no rates.

8. Paro: finance and accounting, rate approved by Paro

Paro places finance and accounting experts, from bookkeeping and FP&A to controller and fractional CFO work. It claims to accept the top 2% of applicants. You propose a rate and Paro approves it. Older published bands put controllers and FP&A experts at $150 to $250 an hour and CFOs at $250 to $400.

The screen. An application, a recruiter interview, skills tests, a third-party background check, then periodic re-verification.

How fast work arrives. We found no current first-hand data. Paro suits accountants and FP&A leads more than bankers; for deal people, micro1's finance track and the expert networks below are a closer fit.

9. GLG, AlphaSights and Guidepoint: paid calls, rate set for you

Expert networks pay bankers, investors and operators for one-hour calls with funds and consultancies. They are the fastest money on this list once you are in their database, and the least in your control. A December 2025 survey of 1,368 experts found that 65% earn under $400 a call, the most common bracket is $100 to $199, clients pay $1,000 to $1,500 a call, and experts receive under 20% of that. 69% do not set their own rate.

The screen. A profile and compliance checks. No skills test.

How fast work arrives. Per call, and sometimes the same week. It is never a steady income, and your current employer's rules may forbid it.

Is Braintrust legit?

Yes. Braintrust is a real company that pays its talent and charges them no fee. The doubts come from three places.

  • The token. Braintrust runs on its own BTRST token, used for governance and referral rewards. On 8 October 2026 it traded near $0.056, down about 99.9% from its September 2021 high of $46.82, per CoinGecko. Your project pay does not depend on it, so it matters to you mainly as a signal of how the business has gone.
  • The fee vote. In July 2023 a governance proposal raised the client fee from 10% to 15%. The record shows every vote cast by a single address, adamjacksonsf.eth, which carries the name of Braintrust's co-founder. "Community-owned" is a generous description.
  • The experience. Braintrust has a Trustpilot score of 1.7 from 20 reviews. Reviewers from 2024 to 2026 describe applications held until a screening video is done, rejections without feedback, an AI interview tool down for over a week, and a push to buy tokens for "hints" after a rejection.

Watch for impostors too. In August 2023, Blind users reported fake listings impersonating a real company on Braintrust, and a 2025 Trustpilot reviewer was contacted on WhatsApp by a "recruiter" claiming Braintrust as the source. Braintrust's own guidance says it never asks for your credentials or for offers to be signed off the platform.

The verdict: legit, with no fee to you, but no longer the network it was in 2021. Use it as one more AI training source, not as your Toptal replacement.

Sites like Toptal we left off, and why

  • Upwork Expert-Vetted. Invite-only, the "top 1%" of Upwork, with a 30-minute interview and a proctored coding test for engineers. Upwork's freelancer fee is now variable, 0% to 15% per contract. You cannot apply, so it cannot be your plan.
  • Turing. Automated tests and a three-month retake wait. Turing now puts frontier-lab training work first after its $111 million raise in June 2025, so it competes with micro1 and Mercor rather than Toptal. Turing sets and negotiates your rate.
  • Lemon.io. 1.2% accepted and you keep 100% of your rate, but its own comparison page puts client rates at $55 to $120 an hour, which caps a senior US engineer.
  • Andela. An AI-scored English test, coding challenges and a recorded interview. Built for engineers in its approved regions at rates well under US senior levels.
  • Contra. No commission to freelancers and no real vetting. A portfolio site, not a network.
  • Graphite. Now part of Toptal.

The catch with micro1 and Mercor

They are not Toptal with better pay. They are different work.

On Toptal you build product for a client, and the engagement can run for years. On micro1 and Mercor you evaluate model output, write hard problems with reference solutions, and grade reasoning. One senior engineer on Blind said most Mercor contracts involve no actual coding. Projects run for weeks, not years. Some volume tracks cap hours at about 15 a week. Work ends with an email, sometimes with no reason given. And in November 2025 Mercor ended a Meta project with more than 5,000 contractors, then offered a replacement at $16 an hour against the reported $21.

What you get in return: no sales, no rate negotiation, no unpaid test project, and the highest printed hourly rates on this list for senior people. If you are employed full-time, check your contract first. The side hustles for engineers guide covers who owns what you make outside work, and the $150-an-hour coding side hustle covers how AI training work fits around a day job.

Which network to apply to first

  • Big Tech engineer in the US, UK, Canada or Australia. Apply to micro1's Senior Software Engineer track first, then Mercor. Keep Gun.io or Toptal running for long client work.
  • Engineer in India or elsewhere outside the English-speaking markets. Start with micro1's software engineering listings, none of which is closed by country. Then Mercor's unrestricted engineering roles, and the full software engineering board. Lemon.io and Andela will take you, at lower rates.
  • Investment banker, PE, VC or hedge fund alumnus. micro1's Investment & Finance Expert track, then the rest of the finance listings. Add GLG or AlphaSights for calls. Mercor's finance roles suit you if you are in the US.
  • Former MBB or tier-two consultant. micro1's Management Consultant track, then Mercor's consulting network and the wider business operations listings. Catalant or BTG for real client engagements.
  • Controller, FP&A lead or fractional CFO. Paro, then micro1's finance listings.
  • You want one client for two years. Toptal is still the best-known name for that, with Gun.io and A.Team close behind. Accept the wait as the price.

Most people who earn steadily do not pick one. They clear two or three gates in the same two weeks and take whichever pays first.

Practice the interview before it counts

Every network on this list interviews you, and the three fastest ones use an AI interviewer that does not tell you why you failed. The questions are not the hard part. Pacing, structure and talking through your reasoning out loud are, and they are rusty after years of being on the other side of the table.

How AI training platforms screen you compares the gates and how many attempts each one gives you. Then run a Skillora mock interview, an AI interviewer that asks follow-ups and scores your answers, before you spend an attempt on a $280-an-hour track.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Toptal alternatives?

For senior engineers, micro1 and Mercor, because both print the rate on the listing and screen in hours rather than weeks. micro1's senior engineering, finance and consulting tracks paid $245 to $280 an hour on 8 October 2026. For client work like Toptal's, Gun.io pays you exactly the rate you set and A.Team lets you keep your full rate. For consultants, Catalant. For accountants and FP&A, Paro.

Is Toptal worth it?

For long client engagements, yes, if you can wait. Accepted freelancers report anything from a first client within a week to three months with nothing. Recent Blind and Hacker News posts describe rates pushed down by clients and by Toptal itself. You set your rate, but Toptal does not show you what it bills the client.

What is the Toptal screening process?

Five stages over three to eight weeks: a language and personality call, a timed skills test, a live technical screen with a domain expert, an unpaid test project of one to three weeks, and ongoing client ratings. Toptal says about 3% of applicants make it through. A failed stage usually means a waiting period before you can retry, which one engineer reported as six to 18 months.

Does Toptal take a cut from freelancers?

Not from your rate. Toptal says freelancers set their own rates and it takes no cut. It charges the client a higher rate on top and does not publish the gap. One Hacker News user said the client was billed double their rate.

Is Braintrust legit?

Yes. It is a real company, it pays talent, and it charges talent no fee, with clients paying 15% on top. Its BTRST token is down about 99.9% from its 2021 high, its Trustpilot score is 1.7, and a growing share of its listings are AI training work, so treat it as a secondary source of projects.

What are the best Toptal alternatives for finance experts?

Graphite was the obvious one until Toptal bought it in January 2026. For bankers and investors, micro1's Investment & Finance Expert track paid $245 to $280 an hour on 8 October 2026, and expert networks like GLG pay per call. For accountants, FP&A leads and fractional CFOs, Paro.

Can engineers in India join micro1 or Mercor?

micro1, yes. None of its live listings was restricted by country on 8 October 2026, and its volume engineering tracks state no location requirement, though the $245 to $280 senior track prefers a base in an English-speaking country. On Mercor, 120 of 328 listings were restricted by country, mostly to the US, but 21 of its 37 software engineering listings were open.
