Consulting Recruiting Timeline 2026-27: You Have Two Windows Left

BCG closed July 7. Bain closed July 19. McKinsey closed August 11, two days ago. If you planned to think about consulting applications this fall, the 2026-27 campus full-time window is already gone.

That is the defining feature of the consulting recruiting timeline: it is annual, it is early, and it does not negotiate. Miss a July deadline and the next one sits twelve months out. But "the window closed" is only true for one kind of candidate. Two windows are still open. First-year MBAs are about twelve weeks from the applications that decide summer 2027 internships, and the quiet work that wins those January interviews happens in September and October. Experienced hires, who are told recruiting is "rolling, apply anytime," are inside one of the year's two hiring spikes right now, with the second arriving in January.

This page is the full calendar: what closed and when it reopens, the MBA internship cycle, the rhythm hiding inside "rolling" experienced-hire recruiting, how long each firm takes once you press submit, and a prep plan built backward from the interview date instead of forward from the deadline. Dates come from firm postings and campus career-center trackers as of August 13, 2026. Firms move dates without notice, so confirm on the careers page before you plan around one.

One number to hold while you read: at every firm, on every track, interviews arrive four to eight weeks after applications. The timeline's real message is that prep cannot start when the deadline does.

The 2026-27 calendar at a glance

Consulting recruiting timeline 2026-27: campus full-time, MBA internship, and experienced-hire tracks month by month
Three tracks, one rule: interviews land four to eight weeks after applications.

Four tracks, four rhythms:

  • Campus full-time (undergraduates, non-MBA master's, PhD and other advanced degrees): applications opened July 1 and closed between July 7 and August 11, 2026, depending on firm. Interviews run August through October. Offers land by late fall. Next window: summer 2027.
  • MBA internship (summer 2027, the pipeline to full-time offers): networking and case groups form September through November. Applications open in the fall; deadlines cluster from late November to early January, school and office dependent. Interviews compress into January and February. Offers follow within days.
  • MBA full-time (second-years without a return offer): deadlines land next summer alongside campus full-time, with interviews in early fall 2027.
  • Experienced hire: rolling all year, with hiring spikes in January and July-August. Application to offer runs four weeks to four months depending on firm and office.

Every track shares one mechanic: applications are reviewed as they arrive, interview slots fill in order, and the earliest applicants meet the most open calendar. Rolling review means a deadline is the last possible moment, not the intended one.

The campus window just shut. Here's what that means

This cycle's dates, for the record: BCG's full-time deadline fell on July 7, Bain's Associate Consultant deadline on July 19, and McKinsey's Business Analyst and APD Associate window ran July 1 to August 11 for candidates graduating between December 2026 and August 2027. All three reviewed on a rolling basis.

If you applied, your timeline is now short. Screen decisions typically arrive within two to four weeks. McKinsey sends the Solve assessment shortly after the screen, and BCG runs its online case, Casey, before live rounds. First-round interviews start in late August and September; finals run September and October. Work backward and the math is uncomfortable: a September first round is weeks away, which makes this the single worst month to be "planning to start" case prep. Start the daily reps today and put your remaining hours into live cases, not reading.

If you missed it, the honest news first: the next campus full-time window at the big three opens around July 2027, and no amount of networking reopens this one. Three moves make the year useful. Put July 1, 2027 in your calendar now, because next cycle's early applicants get the open interview slots. Watch the second-tier and Big Four strategy windows, several of which historically run into early fall; check each firm's posting directly. And schedule your prep to peak next June, not next spring: the candidates who clear the 2027 window will mostly have started their twelve-week plan in April.

The January window: MBA internship recruiting

For first-year MBAs, the visible part of the consulting recruiting timeline is a tight one: applications due between late November and early January, interviews in January and February, offers by late February. The decisive part is invisible and earlier.

September through November is when firms meet you. Coffee chats, office events, and school presentations are where referrals get sourced and where interviewers first attach a face to a resume. None of it is formally scored; all of it shapes whose application gets read warmly. Three genuine conversations with consultants from a target office beat twenty business cards, and they need to happen before applications open, which means before Halloween.

The same weeks are when preparation has to compound. Case groups form in September. By Thanksgiving you should be running full live cases, not reading about them; a scored transcript like this annotated case example shows the bar each exchange has to clear. Behavioral prep runs in parallel, because every firm scores it separately and McKinsey's PEI can end a candidacy the case half won. And your answer to "why consulting" should survive follow-ups by the time you sit in a first coffee chat, because that is where it gets asked first.

Second-years without a return offer: your full-time deadlines land next summer, your interviews early next fall, and everything above applies on a one-year delay.

Experienced hires: rolling has a rhythm

"Apply anytime" is technically true and practically misleading. Experienced-hire recruiting has a pulse, and knowing it changes when you press submit.

The two spikes are January and July-August. January opens new hiring budgets and follows post-bonus attrition; July and August reset mid-year plans and fill fall start classes. You are inside the second spike now. Applying during a spike means more open seats, faster recruiter responses, and start dates that map to the big cohort classes. Applying in the dead zones, late spring and December, means the same process with longer silences.

Process length varies more by firm than candidates expect. Glassdoor candidate reports put BCG at four to eight weeks from application to offer, averaging about a month. McKinsey commonly runs two to four months: an extra assessment, more interviews, and partner calendars that fill weeks out. Plan on the range, not the average, and expect the shape to be the same everywhere: recruiter screen, an online assessment at most firms, a first round of two interviews, a final round of two or three with partners. The case content and scoring are the campus versions with a higher bar on judgment and synthesis, not a different exam.

Two levers matter more for experienced hires than for any campus track. Referrals: with no school pipeline attached, a referral is the difference between a warm read and a cold database, and it should be secured before the application goes in, ideally from someone in the practice you're targeting. And timing arithmetic: offers expect a start inside a notice-period-plus-a-few-weeks horizon, so an application submitted this month points at a first round in September and a start class around year end. If that is the class you want, the window to apply is now, and the window to be interview-ready is four to six weeks from now.

Work backward from the interview, not the deadline

Consulting interview prep plan built backward from the interview date: 12, 8, 4, and 1 week milestones
Count back from the interview date, not the application deadline.

Every track above obeys the same four-to-eight-week gap between application and interview. So ignore the application date and plan from the interview date.

  • Twelve weeks out: start the daily fifteen-minute mental math block, because speed math is the slowest skill to build and the first to decay. Read one full case per question type to learn the shapes: structuring, sizing, math, exhibits, brainstorming, synthesis. Draft the behavioral stories.
  • Eight weeks out: structure drills against real industries, ninety seconds each. First live cases with a partner or an AI interviewer. Stories reworked to PEI depth, one story per theme, ready for ten minutes of probing.
  • Four weeks out: a full live case every two or three days, with someone who probes and scores you. This is where reading stops helping; the skills that decide scores, recovering from "what else," reading an exhibit under silence, synthesizing on demand, only exist under live pressure.
  • One week out: no new material. Daily math, one case every other day, and forced sixty-second syntheses at random moments. If the firm runs an online assessment, do a timed dry run.

The plan is the same whether the interview is a September first round you just earned, a January MBA slot, or an experienced-hire loop you triggered by applying. Only the start date moves.

What to do this week, by track

  • Applied campus full-time: assume a September first round. Start daily math today, book three live cases for the next two weeks, and run a Solve or Casey dry run before the real one lands.
  • Missed campus full-time: calendar entries for July 1, 2027 and for an April 2027 prep start. Scan tier-two and Big Four postings monthly this fall.
  • First-year MBA: three consultant conversations booked before October, a case group joined this month, and a deadline audit of your target offices done by Labor Day.
  • Experienced hire: pick your target start month, count back twelve weeks, and if that lands anywhere near today, line up the referral and submit inside this spike. Prep runs in parallel with the process, not before it.

The timeline rewards exactly one behavior: starting the slow work before the calendar forces it. Deadlines decide when you apply. The four-to-eight-week gap decides whether you were ready.
