The going rate for remote document review jobs is $26 an hour. That is what Dauntless Discovery posts for licensed attorneys. Consilio posts $23. HaystackID and Beacon Hill Legal have posted within a few dollars of both.

The rate is not the bad news. The bad news is who else is doing first-pass review now. Relativity's aiR for Review sends each document to OpenAI's GPT models and gets a coding decision back. In the spring 2026 eDiscovery Business Confidence Survey, 69% of respondents reported generative AI in deployment.

Models like those learn from lawyers. Mercor posts $100 to $150 an hour for attorneys to grade model-drafted discovery work, including whether the model got the privilege call right. micro1 posts $140 to $400 for immigration and litigation tracks that list document review among their skills.

So the judgment you sell to a review agency for $26 sells to an AI lab for four to six times as much. Not to everyone. The labs screen hard, and the top tracks want BigLaw experience you may not have.

This guide covers three things. What remote document review jobs pay in 2026 and where to find them. The eDiscovery jobs one rung up. And the AI training work a document reviewer can realistically qualify for, with the live listings and what each one asks.

What remote document review jobs pay in 2026

English-language first-pass review pays licensed attorneys $23 to $30 an hour. Foreign-language review pays up to $80. Salary sites quote higher numbers, and those numbers mislead.

Review workPosted hourly rateWhere the number comes from
First-pass review, licensed attorney$23 to $30Consilio $23, HaystackID $24 to $26, Dauntless $26, Larimer Law $28
First-pass review, one-state license$25 to $35Andreu & Palma, Florida and Georgia licenses only
Agency median, all review levels$35 to $41Glassdoor self-reports: Consilio $35, Special Counsel $41
Foreign-language review$40 to $80LHH posting for Japanese, Mandarin and Korean reviewers
Japanese-language review$65 to $75LHH postings in Chicago and Portland
Non-attorney document reviewer$20 to $27ZipRecruiter middle band, $23.33 average in August 2026

Glassdoor puts the average remote document review attorney at $51 an hour, from 24 submissions. ZipRecruiter's city averages run from $43 in Orlando to $52 in Washington, DC. Both convert annual salary estimates into hourly figures. The project posting is the number you will be offered.

Run the annual math. $26 an hour, 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year is $52,000. That assumes no gap between projects, and projects end when the client says so. Beacon Hill's postings describe projects lasting from about a week to several months.

The postings also carry conditions the rate does not show:

  • Bar admission. Most accept an active license in any US jurisdiction. Some do not. Dauntless and a July 2026 Consilio posting want you admitted in the state where you live.
  • Residency. Dauntless hires from 26 states only. One LDiscovery posting limited applicants to Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia and DC.
  • Experience. Dauntless wants 18 months of review in the last two years, preferably on Relativity.
  • Hours. Forty hours a week is the floor. Consilio's postings run up to 60, scheduled between 7 am and 10 pm local time.
  • Exclusivity. Dauntless bars any concurrent employment, paid or unpaid, during a project. Read that clause before you take on anything else, including the AI work below.

Where to find remote document review jobs

Review work runs through staffing agencies and managed review vendors, not law firm career pages. Register with several at once. Projects staff in days, and the agency with your file current gets the call.

  • Beacon Hill Legal claims more than 46,000 attorneys in its national database and staffs remote eDiscovery review teams.
  • Consilio says it keeps more than 17,000 contract attorneys and foreign-language reviewers on call across 20 languages.
  • HaystackID, KLDiscovery and Dauntless Discovery run their own remote review teams.
  • LHH posts foreign-language review at $40 to $80 an hour.
  • Epiq and Lighthouse run managed review for large matters.

For job boards, search Indeed, ZipRecruiter and LinkedIn for "remote document review attorney". Glassdoor showed 88 open US listings under that search in August 2026. State bar career centers carry some project and team lead roles too.

Three moves raise your rate inside this market:

  1. Add a language. Japanese review pays two to three times English first-pass.
  2. Get certified on Relativity. The RelativityOne Certified Pro exam costs $50. The specialist exams cost $250 each.
  3. Ask for second-level, QC and privilege log work by name. Those are the calls a human still signs off on, and they lead to the jobs below.

Remote eDiscovery jobs and eDiscovery attorney jobs

eDiscovery jobs are the salaried rung above review. A reviewer who learns the platform becomes an analyst. One who can run a review and argue about ESI becomes eDiscovery counsel.

RoleTypical paySource
eDiscovery analyst, entry level$55,000 to $75,000Legal Alphabet 2026 guide
eDiscovery analyst, mid-level$75,000 to $105,000Legal Alphabet 2026 guide
eDiscovery project manager$90,500 to $129,500ZipRecruiter, $114,152 average
eDiscovery attorney$80,000 to $130,000ZipRecruiter middle band
eDiscovery counsel, senior$180,000 to $210,000Sher Edling posting, San Francisco, June 2026
Remote eDiscovery roles, all titles$62,000 to $118,000ZipRecruiter middle band

Remote eDiscovery jobs exist across all of these titles, but the attorney roles are scarce. ZipRecruiter reports few open eDiscovery attorney positions nationwide. Sher Edling's counsel role asked for a litigator with deep technical eDiscovery knowledge, which describes someone who already ran reviews, not someone who sat in them.

The industry mood is cooling too. In the same eDiscovery Business Confidence Survey, the share of respondents calling business conditions good fell from 59% to 39% in six months.

AI is taking first-pass review. That is the opening.

Here is how aiR for Review works. A lawyer writes the review instructions. Relativity sends each document with those instructions to OpenAI's models through Microsoft Azure. The model returns a relevance decision with its reasoning. Relativity's own rollout advice is to test the instructions on a small set, check them against senior reviewer decisions, then run at scale.

Relativity's AI page, updated in July 2026, lists GPT-4o, GPT-4.1 mini, GPT-5 mini, GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2 behind its aiR products. Eric Wall of Syllo, a review platform vendor, argued in 2025 that firms would use automated first-level review to pull review back in-house, away from the vendors who staff contract attorneys.

Look at what survives in every one of these workflows: validation, privilege and quality control. A human still checks the model's calls. Those are judgment calls, and judgment is what AI labs buy.

The labs that build these models pay lawyers to grade them. Mercor's legal listing describes grading model-drafted contract and discovery work, checking privilege calls and verifying that citations support what they claim. That is second-level review with a different client. It pays about four to six times as much, and it trains the kind of model that took your first-pass work.

The AI training ladder for document reviewers

Pay ladder from remote document review jobs at $23 to $30 an hour up to AI training jobs for lawyers at $60 to $400 an hour
Top of each posted hourly range. Review rates from 2026 agency postings; AI training rates from Skillora's legal board, 8 October 2026.

Skillora's board had 58 live legal listings on 8 October 2026. Here are the ones a document reviewer can reach, from the lowest bar to the highest.

Rung 1: $31 to $60, built for review backgrounds

micro1's Data Privacy Analyst is the closest match to review work in the whole feed. You spot-check redacted datasets for personal information the redaction missed, and document what you find. The listing asks for a background as a paralegal, eDiscovery specialist or legal document review lead, plus experience in document review or litigation support. It lists no bar requirement. The top of its range is double what first-pass review pays.

Rung 2: $60 to $150, open beyond practicing attorneys

Mercor's Legal Expert pool is a standing listing. It stays open whether or not a project is running, and Mercor invites people from the pool when one starts. It accepts practicing lawyers and also compliance specialists, policy professionals and paralegals. Projects have posted from $60 to $150. You apply with a resume and take a short AI interview, about 20 minutes.

DataAnnotation's Attorney role pays $75 to $125. You grade AI legal reasoning for invented citations, misapplied precedent and jurisdiction errors, then write the analysis the model should have produced. It asks for a JD with practice experience or a strong academic record, and the practice project is paid.

Rung 3: $80 to $180, where privilege calls get graded

Mercor's Legal Expert (J.D./LL.B.) posts $100 to $150. This is the listing that names discovery work and privilege calls. It needs a current license and experience in litigation, transactional or regulatory practice. Mercor says the firm name matters less than whether you did the analysis yourself, recently enough to explain why you came out where you did. A reviewer who made privilege calls on real matters can explain that.

micro1's Lawyer role posts $80 to $180. You review sample contracts, flag risky clauses and write short memos for non-lawyers, using public or synthetic documents only. It accepts an active or lapsed US bar membership and wants four or more years of document-heavy work. Its examples are contracts, compliance and transactions, so lead with any contract review you did.

Rung 4: $80 to $150, for reviewers who also drafted

micro1's commercial litigation tracks want three or more years of post-JD litigation with hands-on drafting of motions and discovery. The commercial contract track accepts a lapsed license. Review time alone will not clear these. Review plus your own drafting on a litigation team will.

Rung 5: $140 to $400, document review listed, BigLaw required

micro1's Immigration Attorney and Litigation Associate Attorney tracks both list document review in their skills. Both also want BigLaw experience. The litigation track names AmLaw 100 firms and active US admission. The immigration track wants an active license and complex immigration casework at a large firm.

Be honest with yourself about this rung. Coding documents on a BigLaw matter through an agency is not the same as working at the firm. The interview probes what you decided and drafted, so claim only what you did.

How to move from document review to AI training

  1. Rewrite your resume around decisions. "Reviewed documents" tells a screener nothing. "Made first-level privilege and responsiveness calls on a securities matter, then ran second-level QC and drafted the privilege log" tells them you can grade a model. Name the platforms you used.
  2. Apply to the standing pools first. Mercor's legal listings stay open between projects, so you can be screened and waiting when work starts.
  3. Prepare for the AI interview. Mercor's runs about 20 minutes. micro1's is a live AI interviewer that probes deeper when an answer is thin, and our micro1 attorney interview guide walks through it. Rehearse out loud with Skillora's scored mock interview before the real one.
  4. Clear your contracts. Check your review agreement for an exclusivity clause. Never use client documents in AI work. ABA Formal Opinion 512 requires informed client consent before client information goes into a self-learning generative AI tool. micro1's Lawyer and commercial litigation listings state they use public or synthetic material only.
  5. Keep review as your floor until the AI work is steady. AI projects also start on short notice and end when the client is done. Mercor says so in its own listings.

The short version

Remote document review pays $23 to $30 an hour, and AI is taking the first-pass work that pays it. eDiscovery analyst and project manager roles are the salaried way up. AI training is the faster one: the same privilege and responsiveness calls, graded for an AI lab, post at $60 to $150, and two tracks that list document review reach $400 for BigLaw lawyers.

Frequently asked questions

Are remote document review jobs still worth taking in 2026?

As a bridge, yes. As a career, the numbers are against it. First-pass review pays $23 to $30 an hour for licensed attorneys, projects end without much notice, and 69% of eDiscovery organizations surveyed in spring 2026 had generative AI in deployment. Take review work for income while you build toward second-level review, an eDiscovery role or AI training work.

Do you need a law license for document review jobs?

For attorney review roles, yes. Most agencies want an active bar admission in any US jurisdiction, and some want admission in the state where you live. Non-attorney document reviewer roles exist and pay $20 to $27 an hour on ZipRecruiter's middle band. One Consilio reviewer reported $20 unlicensed against $23 licensed.

How much do eDiscovery attorney jobs pay?

ZipRecruiter puts the middle band at $80,000 to $130,000 a year. Senior eDiscovery counsel roles pay more: a June 2026 Sher Edling posting in San Francisco listed $180,000 to $210,000. These are salaried roles that want litigation skill plus deep platform knowledge, and few are open at any time.

Is AI replacing document review attorneys?

It is replacing first-pass review faster than anything else. Relativity's aiR for Review codes documents with OpenAI models, and 69% of eDiscovery organizations surveyed in spring 2026 had generative AI in deployment. Validation, privilege review and quality control still need lawyers. Those same skills are what AI labs pay $100 an hour or more to buy.

Can I do AI training work while on a document review project?

Check your review contract first. Dauntless Discovery, for one, bars any concurrent employment, paid or unpaid, during a project. If your agreement allows outside work, AI training fits around review because it is remote and flexible. Never bring client documents into it.

Does document review experience count for AI training jobs?

Yes, if you describe it as judgment rather than volume. micro1's Data Privacy Analyst role asks for document review and eDiscovery backgrounds by name. Mercor's J.D. listing grades discovery work and privilege calls. The $140 to $400 micro1 tracks list document review as a skill but also require BigLaw experience, so review alone will not clear them.
