Upwork publishes a median rate for mechanical engineers of $35 an hour, with a typical range of $30 to $50.

The BLS median wage for mechanical engineers was $104,110 in May 2025. Across 2,080 hours, that is $50.05 an hour on payroll, with someone else paying half your payroll tax, your insurance and your software.

Once you run the arithmetic below, a solo freelance mechanical engineer needs about $96 an hour to stand still.

So the most visible freelance market in this profession pays a third of what it costs to work in it. That is not a negotiation problem. It is a market-selection problem, and every guide to freelancing as a mechanical engineer skips the thing that causes it.

Mechanical engineering has three separate markets, and they are separated by a licence question that most working engineers have never had to answer. You have spent your career inside an exemption that belongs to your employer. The day you go freelance, it stops covering some of what you do and keeps covering the rest, and which side of that line your work falls on decides whether you are quoting $35 an hour or $155.

This guide sorts freelance mechanical engineering work into those three tiers, with the real rates on each, the two licences nobody mentions, the arithmetic for setting your own number, and live listings for the tier that pays best per hour with no licence at all. The number you have to beat before you quote anything

Every rate guide tells you to charge more. None of them tell you what more means. Here is the calculation, built from your own salaried baseline.

Start with the BLS median of $104,110, or $50.05 an hour. To end the year no worse off as a freelancer, you have to cover:

  • The employer half of payroll tax, about $7,960. Self-employment tax is 15.3 percent on 92.35 percent of net earnings, 12.4 percent for Social Security up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500 plus 2.9 percent for Medicare. Your employer used to pay half of that.
  • Professional liability cover, which Insureon puts at an average of $2,010 a year for engineers.
  • Your CAD seat. SOLIDWORKS Design Standard lists at $2,820 a year per user in the US, Professional at $3,456 and Premium at $4,716. Simulation tools cost more.
  • Health insurance, which is your own number and a bad one in 2026. ACA marketplace insurers raised premiums 26 percent on average for 2026, benchmark silver premiums rose 17 percent in state-run marketplaces and 30 percent on Healthcare.gov, and the enhanced premium tax credits expired at the end of 2025. Average net monthly premium payments rose 58 percent, from $113 to $178.

Before health insurance, that is about $116,900 of cost to replicate a $104,110 job.

Now the part that breaks most freelance rate calculators. You do not bill 2,080 hours. Selling, quoting, scoping, invoicing, chasing payment and unpaid revisions all come out of the same year. Plan on 65 percent chargeable time, roughly 1,350 billable hours.

$116,900 divided by 1,350 is $86.60 an hour, before a single dollar of health coverage, retirement or profit. Add a modest $12,000 of coverage and you are at $95.50. Call it $96.

Check that against how consulting firms actually price. ACEC financial survey benchmarks put solo and home-office overhead at 0.8 to 1.2 times direct labour, with healthy firms targeting 10 to 15 percent net margin. That gives a billing multiplier near two times direct labour: $50.05 times two is $100 an hour.

Two independent methods land within four dollars of each other. Your break-even is around $96 to $100, and it moves fast with utilisation. At 80 percent chargeable it drops to about $78. At 50 percent it rises to about $125.

Now look at the $35 median again. It is not a starting rate you grow out of. It is roughly a third of break-even, which means the volume required to fix it does not exist in a 1,350-hour year.

Gate one: your licence exemption belongs to your employer

The industrial exemption follows the work, not your employment status.

Most mechanical engineers in the US do not hold a PE, and have never needed one. That is not an accident and it is not a loophole. It is the industrial exemption, and it is written into most state practice acts.

Read the wording, because it decides your freelance career.

Texas Occupations Code section 1001.057 exempts the activities of a private corporation or business entity, and of its full-time employees or other personnel under its direct supervision and control, in connection with two things: reasonable modifications to the entity's own buildings and facilities that are not accessible to the general public, and work related to the research, development, design, fabrication, production, assembly, integration or service of products manufactured by the entity.

California's Business and Professions Code section 6747 is broader and much more useful to a freelancer. It exempts engineering work performed by a manufacturing, mining, public utility, research and development or other industrial corporation, or by its employees, provided the work is connected to or incidental to the products, systems or services of that corporation or its affiliates. And it defines employees to include consultants, temporary employees, contract employees, and those persons hired pursuant to third-party contracts. Civil engineering is carved out.

Read those two together and the rule falls out. The exemption follows the work, not your employment status. It asks whose product this is.

So:

  • Contract design work on a client's own product line is usually inside the exemption. Your 1099 status does not break it.
  • Offering engineering services to the public is outside it. That is the whole point of the exemption's boundary, and NCEES states the consequence plainly: only a licensed engineer may prepare, sign, seal and submit engineering drawings, and licensure is what allows you to work as an independent engineering consultant and to start your own engineering firm.
  • NSPE's primer on engineering licensure counts fourteen states with no industrial exemption at all, and NSPE's stated policy is to phase the exemption out everywhere.

Two consequences worth acting on. First, if you are relying on the exemption, your defensible position is contract work embedded in a client's product development, not a general engineering services business. Second, Texas adds a penalty that should make you careful with your own marketing: a person who claims the exemption and is found to have represented themselves, directly or indirectly, as legally qualified to practise engineering cannot claim the exemption again until the tenth anniversary of that representation. How you describe yourself on a website is part of your compliance.

Gate two: the second licence, which is your business

Your personal licence is not the only one, and this is the requirement freelancers find out about after they have already incorporated. In most states the business entity that offers engineering services needs its own authorisation, usually called a certificate of authorization. Harbor Compliance's fifty-state survey counts 34 states requiring a COA and 8 more requiring a different form of firm registration, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee and Rhode Island among them. Ten jurisdictions require nothing, including Colorado, Massachusetts, Oregon, Pennsylvania and DC.

Where it applies, the firm has to name a licensed engineer in responsible charge. Fees are small, from $0 to about $220 initially with renewals up to $150 annually or biennially, and several states charge nothing for a sole proprietorship with no employees. West Virginia and Rhode Island both zero-rate that case.

The cost is trivial. The sequencing is not. If your business plan is "form an LLC, then find clients," you may have created the entity that needs the authorisation before you have the licence that lets it hold one.

The three tiers, sorted by whose product it is

Sort by whose product the deliverable belongs to, not by how easy the work is to start. That single question sets the rate, the gate and the ceiling.

Tier one: work that gets sealed

Permit sets, code compliance reviews, pressure vessel and boiler calculations, structural and MEP design for buildings, forensic engineering, expert witness work, anything that becomes a public record or protects a third party who never hired you.

Published consulting rate schedules put this work at $120 to $155 an hour for a project engineer holding a PE, $155 to $200 for a senior PE or project manager, $200 to $275 for a principal engineer, and $250 to $350 for a firm principal. MEP and specialty structural run 10 to 20 percent above that in tight markets.

The gate is everything you have just read. A PE licence in the state where the project sits, firm authorisation in most states, and professional liability cover you will actually need rather than merely own. The work is well paid because the seal caps supply, and the seal caps supply on purpose.

The highest rates in this profession and the lowest are both real, and an administrative fact separates them, not talent.

Tier two: the client's own product

Modelling and drafting, design for manufacture, tolerance stacks, FEA and CFD on a client's part, fixture and tooling design, prototype iteration, technical documentation. This is what Upwork, Fiverr, Cad Crowd and the rest actually sell.

The rate is Upwork's published $35 median, in a $30 to $50 range. No licence required in most states, because the industrial exemption covers it.

That last sentence is the problem. The absence of a gate is exactly why the rate is what it is. You are competing on a global platform for a deliverable nobody needs a licence to produce, against engineers whose cost of living is a fraction of yours, in an auction where the buyer sees ten bids and one price column. This is the tier every guide to freelancing as a mechanical engineer recommends first, and it is the only one of the three that pays below your salaried hourly.

It is not worthless. It is worth something specific: it works when the buyer cannot substitute you. Narrow the niche until the search that finds you has ten qualified people in it, not ten thousand. Medical device design under 21 CFR 820, turbomachinery, cryogenics, battery thermal management, high-volume injection moulding with real DFM judgment. Generic CAD is a commodity. Domain judgment is not, and the rate difference between those two things inside the same tier is larger than the gap between tiers.

Tier three: no engineering deliverable at all

Nobody is buying a design from you. They are buying your judgment directly: AI model evaluation and training data, expert network calls, FE and PE exam tutoring, technical writing, courseware, adjunct teaching.

No client in the licensing sense. Nothing gets sealed. No firm authorisation, no professional liability exposure on a design, no state boundary. The exemption question never arises because you are not practising engineering for anyone's project.

And it is the best paid hourly work available to an unlicensed mechanical engineer, which is the part nobody says out loud.

Be honest about that range. It runs from $10 to $200. A great deal of AI training work is badly paid, and the entry-level robotics data listings at $10 to $20 an hour are exactly the piecework this article is telling you to avoid. The point is not that the category pays well. It is that this category prices your engineering judgment separately from your tool skills, and no other freelance channel does.

The tell in the data: the software is not the asset

Sort those listings by rate and a pattern appears that should change how you market yourself in every tier. Roles named after software pay less than roles named after judgment. "SolidWorks Specialist" pays $40 to $100. "Autodesk Inventor Specialist" pays $30 to $100. Mercor's "Application Users, SolidWorks Premium on Windows" pays $45 to $55, and the job is roughly what it sounds like: use the software while the session is recorded.

"Mechanical Engineering Expert" pays $80 to $130. "CFD Engineer" pays up to $150. The difference is not the hours or the difficulty. One buys operation of a tool. The other buys the decision about whether an answer is right.

Note also which tools appear. micro1 is running FreeCAD projects at $40 to $100 an hour, and OpenFOAM and OpenSees show up across Alignerr's engineering listings. Those are free and open source. The $2,820 SOLIDWORKS seat that is a real cost in tier two is not an entry requirement here at all.

The lesson transfers to every tier. If your freelance profile leads with a list of CAD packages, you have described yourself as substitutable in the exact language buyers use to compare on price. Lead with the decisions you are qualified to make.

Mechanical engineer side hustle: what fits around a full-time job

Most people searching this are not leaving. They want a mechanical engineer side hustle that runs on evenings and weekends without endangering the job that pays the mortgage. Three constraints decide what is available.

Your employment agreement, not the licensing statute. Outside-activity approval, non-compete where still enforceable, and invention assignment clauses are usually stricter than any state practice act. Invention assignment is the one that bites engineers specifically: broadly drafted clauses can capture work in the employer's field of business made on your own time. Read it before you take a client, not after.

The exemption is your employer's. Everything above applies with more force when you moonlight. Your day job sits comfortably inside the industrial exemption because you work on your employer's products. A weekend client's HVAC layout for a permit submission does not, and no amount of "it's just a side project" changes the statute.

Interruptibility. Sealed work and fixed-deadline client design both punish a schedule you do not control. Hourly-paid, asynchronous work does not.

That points at the same tier three list, for structural reasons rather than because it pays best:

  • AI model evaluation, $80 to $130 an hour on published mechanical and materials bands. No client, no deliverable your employer could claim, asynchronous hours. Start here.
  • FE and PE exam tutoring and courseware. Steady demand, no licence needed to teach the material, and it compounds if you build your own material.
  • Expert network calls, $100 an hour and up for specialised industrial knowledge. The catch is not the rate, it is utilisation: call volume is somebody else's pipeline and you cannot plan a month around it. Treat it as a bonus, never as the base.
  • Technical writing and standards work. Slower money, excellent positioning, and it makes tier two easier by giving buyers a reason to believe you.
  • Adjunct teaching. Poor hourly rate, real credential value if you intend to move toward expert work later.

One rule for all of it. Do not take a single paid engagement that touches your employer's product category, customer list or supplier base. That is the line that turns a side hustle into a termination.

Licence reach: one dossier, fifty licences

If you go for the PE, understand what it buys you geographically. Engineering made the paperwork efficient and left the licence local.

An NCEES Record is a verified compilation of transcripts, employment history, references and exam results. Every one of the fifty state boards accepts it. Transmitting it costs $175 for the first comity application and $100 for each one after, with no annual renewal fee.

And NCEES says plainly that a Record is not a licence and does not guarantee licensure anywhere. Each state still issues its own, with its own fee, its own renewal and its own requirements.

The pattern across licensed professions is not intuitive:

  • Nurses have the Nurse Licensure Compact, a genuine multistate licence in about 43 jurisdictions.
  • Accountants have practice privilege and are moving to individual-based mobility, the most portable credential of the group.
  • Physicians have the IMLC, which is not a compact licence at all: one application, then separate full licences in each state.
  • Lawyers have nothing, only a bar exam score that transfers and expires.
  • Engineers have the best paperwork and no portability. One dossier, fifty applications, fifty licences.

For tier three, none of this matters, which is a large part of why an unlicensed solo practice scales better there than in sealed work.

If you are hiring a freelance mechanical engineer

Same licence line, read from the other side. It decides what you can safely buy.

Decide first whether your deliverable needs a seal. If anything you are commissioning will be submitted for a permit, filed with a jurisdiction, relied on for code compliance, or used to certify safety to a third party, you need a PE licensed in the state where the project is located, and in most states you need to contract with an entity holding a certificate of authorization. A $40-an-hour freelancer cannot produce that document. You will pay twice, and the second time under deadline.

Ask three questions before you sign. What is your licence number and which state issued it. Does your business hold a certificate of authorization in that state. What are your professional liability limits and is the policy current. Verify the first on the state board's own lookup rather than taking a screenshot. Ten minutes, and it eliminates the failure mode that actually hurts.

If the deliverable does not need a seal, the market is genuinely cheap. Upwork's $30 to $50 range is real for modelling, drafting, analysis and design iteration on your own product. Scope it tightly, because the rate assumes the buyer knows what they want. Supply the requirement, the constraints, the manufacturing process and the tolerances. Ambiguity is what turns a $35 hour into four of them.

Pay for the decision, not the hours, when the decision is the hard part. Design review, failure analysis, DFM assessment and materials selection are one or two days of work from someone with twenty years in that exact process, and they are worth a multiple of the drafting rate. Buying those hours at the drafting rate is how you end up with a part that models beautifully and cannot be made.

Understand the exemption you are relying on. If the work concerns your own products, systems or services, an unlicensed contractor is typically covered by the industrial exemption in your state, and in California the statute names contract employees and third-party contractors explicitly. If the work is for a customer of yours rather than for your own product, check before you assume.

Your first 90 days

  1. Calculate your own number before you look at a single job board. Salaried hourly, plus employer payroll tax, insurance, software and health coverage, divided by a realistic chargeable fraction. If the answer is near $96, that is the floor, and it is a floor, not an ask.
  2. Read your employment agreement. Outside activity, invention assignment, non-solicitation. This binds you even where the licensing statute does not.
  3. Read your state's practice act and find the exemption section. Ten minutes on your board's website. You need to know whether you live in one of the fourteen states without one, and you need the exact wording before you write your website copy.
  4. Do not form an entity yet. Check whether your state requires a certificate of authorization and what it requires of the entity first. In several states a sole proprietorship with no employees is the cheapest correct answer.
  5. Start one tier three engagement this month. No licence, no insurance, no application delay, hourly pay. Three weeks tells you whether the work suits you and it produces revenue while everything else is still paperwork.
  6. Pick your niche before you pick your platform. Write the sentence a buyer would search when they cannot substitute you. If it contains only software names, rewrite it.
  7. Decide about the PE deliberately, not by drift. Four years of qualifying experience plus the exams is a real project. It is worth it if you want tier one and pointless if you do not. Drifting into freelancing without deciding is how engineers end up bidding at $35.
  8. Price every offer against your salaried hour, never against zero. $50.05 is what your hour already earns with someone else carrying the overhead.

Where the tier three work is listed

Work on a client's own product needs none of that, which is precisely why it pays a $35 median against a $96 break-even. Work that produces no engineering deliverable pays $80 to $130 for the same judgment, with no licence question anywhere.

The middle tier is the one every guide recommends first. It is the only one of the three that pays less than the job you already have.

If you want the sealed rates, go get the licence deliberately and budget four years. If you do not, stop selling hours of software operation into a global auction, and start selling the decisions only a few hundred people are qualified to make. The market that pays most for those right now is not asking to see a licence at all.
