Remote CAD work where the client is an AI lab

These remote CAD jobs pay you to teach AI models how real parts and assemblies work. Some projects ask you to build or edit parametric models from a written brief. Others hand you a multi-part assembly and ask for questions with exact answers that only someone who reads CAD well can work out. AI labs pay for this because models still get geometry, tolerances and design intent wrong.

Here is the catch. Many of these projects run in FreeCAD, even when the title says SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or Inventor. The listings say your parametric skills transfer, and prior FreeCAD use is a plus, not a requirement. The tag on each card shows the software the project runs in, read from the listing’s own text.

Python is rarely asked. Most CAD listings here do not mention it, and the ones that do call it a plus for automating modeling work. Many listings are open worldwide; each card shows where.

Freelance CAD Jobs

Freelance CAD jobs here are modeling work. You build fully parametric parts and assemblies from a written brief, edit existing models to new requirements, or audit models for dimensional accuracy, tolerances and design intent. The briefs assume manufacturing knowledge: GD&T to ASME Y14.5, and design for injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining or casting.

The experience bar follows the task. Editing work asks for two to four years of parametric modeling on most listings; complex creation work asks for up to ten. A recognized credential such as CSWP or CSWE can stand in for years on some. Read how a listing pays before you start: some pay per accepted task rather than per hour logged, with a weekly task minimum.

FreeCAD Jobs: Writing Questions About Real Assemblies

These roles never ask you to model anything. You open a multi-part assembly in native FreeCAD files, work out how it functions and why it was designed that way, and write several questions per assembly, each with one exact, verifiable answer. A good question cannot be guessed: answering it takes a measurement, a mate or a tolerance read from the model.

The assemblies come from mechanical, aerospace and industrial design. Each listing says experience in another CAD platform counts if you have not used FreeCAD. Clear technical writing matters as much as CAD skill, because the deliverable is the question.

Remote SolidWorks, AutoCAD and Inventor Jobs

These listings pay for hands-on work inside one specific application, on your own Windows PC. You need the software installed and licensed already; the marketplace provides no licenses, virtual machines or hardware. They also set a screen requirement: a monitor above 2.5 megapixels, such as 1440p or 4K, or two 1080p monitors side by side.

Rates sit below the modeling roles, and the listings are open in fewer countries. If you already run a licensed seat at home, they ask for nothing beyond the software you use every day.

Freelance Circuit Design Jobs

Freelance circuit design jobs are the electrical side of the same work. Tasks cover analog, digital, power, mixed-signal and RF circuits: read the requirements, produce or modify a netlist or schematic, run the simulation, and judge whether the design meets its constraints. Power system roles review load flow, short-circuit and protection coordination calculations instead.

The bar is real hardware. Listings ask for designs that were fabricated, shipped or taped out; simulation-only academic experience does not count. Circuit roles expect Python and a command-line EDA or SPICE workflow, with tools like KiCad and PySpice named.

What the work looks like

A modeling task is a written brief, a deliverable and a check. You build or edit the model, export it in the format the project asks for, and document the design decisions a reviewer needs to accept it. A question task is an assembly and a blank page: you write the questions, the exact answers and where in the model each answer comes from.

If you have never opened FreeCAD, install it before the screen. It is free and open source, and an hour with its part and assembly workbenches is enough to talk about it honestly. Never upload an employer’s or client’s models, drawings or part numbers into a task, and check your employment contract for outside-work clauses first.

CAD AI training jobs, answered

Are these real remote CAD jobs?

Yes. They are paid contracts with AI training marketplaces, and most publish an hourly rate up front. The client is an AI lab, not a manufacturer, so you never bid for the work or manage a client.

Do I need to know FreeCAD?

Not for most listings. Many projects run in FreeCAD, and the listings say experience in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, Creo, NX or CATIA transfers. Prior FreeCAD use is a plus. It is free to install, so try it before the screen.

Do remote CAD jobs require Python?

Rarely. Most CAD listings here do not mention Python, and the ones that do call it a plus for automating modeling work. Simulation and analysis roles are where Python becomes a requirement; those are on the remote mechanical engineer jobs page.

How much do remote CAD jobs pay?

The pay table on this page shows the live published range for each type of work. Modeling and design roles post the highest rates; assembly question writing and own-license software work post less. Every rate comes from the listings themselves.

How is this different from freelance CAD work on Upwork or Fiverr?

Those are client projects you bid for or price yourself, usually on a fixed budget. Here the rate is published before you apply, and the work starts once you pass the screen.

Can I apply from outside the US?

Many listings are open worldwide, and each card shows where a listing is open. The own-license software listings are limited to fewer countries.

How do I get hired?

Apply through the listing, answer the screening questions, then take an AI interview of about 30 minutes before a hiring manager reviews you. Talk through design intent as you would in a design review: why that mate, why that tolerance, what the process allows.

Other places to find remote CAD work

AI training is one market for CAD designers and drafters. These are the established routes to client work.

  • Upwork. Drafting and 3D modeling projects from small businesses. You bid with paid Connects, and the service fee runs from 0% to 15% per contract.
  • Fiverr. Fixed-price CAD gigs you list and price yourself, with a 20% fee on every order.
  • Engineering staffing agencies. Contract designer and drafter roles through agencies such as Actalent, often full time for a fixed term.
  • CAD resellers. SolidWorks and Autodesk resellers hire contract application engineers and trainers.
  • Job shops and product design firms. Overflow modeling and drawing work goes to contractors they already know.

The screen is where these roles are won

Every marketplace above screens with an interview or assessment in your own domain before assigning paid work. Run that interview with Skillora first and get feedback on how you explained your reasoning, not just on what you said.
