Mechanical engineering work with no shop floor

These remote mechanical engineer jobs pay for engineering judgment, not drawings. You write a problem from work you have done: the loads, the constraints, the tolerances and the reference answer. Then you grade how an AI model handles it. Does the free body diagram balance? Did it check buckling before yield? Would the part survive the tolerance stack in assembly?

Remote work is rare in mechanical engineering because the product is physical. Here the deliverable is reasoning, so the whole job runs on a laptop. Most listings are hourly contracts you schedule around a day job. A few are full-week engagements, and some are limited by country; each card shows where a listing is open.

The tag on each card answers the first question most mechanical engineers ask: do I need to code? It reads the listing’s own text. Simulation, CFD and aerodynamics roles often require Python, because their tasks run through scripts and command-line solvers. Expert review and CAD roles mostly do not.

Mechanical Engineering Expert Jobs

Mechanical engineering expert jobs are the core of this page. You write design and analysis problems across statics, dynamics, thermal, fatigue and vibration, each with a worked reference answer. Then you grade model attempts against it and explain every error you find.

The bar differs by listing. Some ask for an MS or PhD, or a BS plus a year or two of design, test or R&D work. Others ask for five or more years of hands-on industry experience on physical products and say little about degrees. Some are standing pools: you apply once and get matched to projects as they open.

Remote CFD Engineer and Aerodynamics Jobs

Remote CFD engineer jobs here pay for simulation judgment. Tasks cover meshing, turbulence model choice, boundary conditions, convergence and validation. Some ask you to grade a model’s answer to a fluids question. Others ask you to design a compact simulation task, run it, and write pass criteria a grader can check automatically.

Expect open-source solvers, because the tasks must run from a command line. OpenFOAM is the one named most, with tools like SU2 and Gmsh beside it, and the listings accept equivalent scriptable tools. Aerodynamics roles ask for an aerospace or fluids specialization and usually require Python.

Remote Mechanical Design Engineer Jobs

Remote mechanical design engineer jobs here work on real CAD assemblies. Some ask you to build or edit parametric parts from a written brief, with GD&T and a manufacturing process in mind. Others hand you a multi-part assembly and ask for questions with exact answers a model has to work out from the geometry.

Many of these projects run in FreeCAD, even when the title names another tool, and the listings say SolidWorks, Creo, NX or Inventor experience transfers. Few ask for Python. The remote CAD jobs page has the full set, including tool-specific roles.

What the work looks like

A review task is a problem, a model’s answer and a rubric. You check the setup, the assumptions, the units and the result, mark each error, and write the answer a senior engineer would sign off. A generative task reverses it: you write the problem from a design you have seen built, plus the reference solution the model is graded against.

The best problems come from what textbooks leave out: the bracket that passed the hand calculation and cracked at the weld, the boundary condition that looked fine until test. Several listings pay per accepted task rather than per hour logged, and set a weekly minimum, so speed and first-time accuracy decide what you earn.

Check your employment contract for outside-work and invention clauses before you apply. Never bring an employer’s drawings, data or part numbers into a task. Disguise the source as you would in a conference paper.

Mechanical engineering AI training jobs, answered

Are these real remote mechanical engineer jobs?

Yes. They are paid contracts with AI training marketplaces, and most publish an hourly rate up front. You write and grade engineering problems for AI labs. You do not design a product for a client or visit a site.

Do I need Python?

For some roles. Simulation, CFD and aerodynamics listings often require practical Python, because their tasks run through scripts and command-line solvers. Expert review and design roles mostly do not ask for it. The tag on each card shows what that listing’s own text says.

Do I need a master’s or a PhD?

Not always. Some listings ask for an MS or PhD, or a BS plus one to two years of relevant work. Others ask for five or more years of hands-on industry experience instead. Each listing states its own bar.

How much do remote mechanical engineer jobs pay?

The pay table on this page shows the live published range for each type of work. Simulation and expert review roles post the highest rates; CAD question-writing roles post less. Every rate comes from the listings themselves.

Can I do this alongside a full-time engineering job?

Usually, if your employer allows paid outside work. Most listings are hourly contracts you schedule yourself. Read your contract’s outside-work and invention clauses first, and never use your employer’s designs in a task.

Are these jobs open outside the US?

Many are. Some marketplaces open their engineering listings worldwide, while others limit them to the US, Canada, the UK and the EU. Each card shows where a listing is open.

How do I get hired?

Apply through the listing, then pass the screen: usually an AI interview of about 30 minutes, sometimes a sample task. Answer as you would in a design review. State the assumptions, show the governing calculation and commit to an answer.

Other places to find remote mechanical engineering work

AI training is one market for mechanical engineers who want remote, hourly work. These are the established routes to client work.

  • Upwork. Design, drafting and analysis projects from small businesses. You bid with paid Connects, and the service fee runs from 0% to 15% per contract.
  • Expert networks. GLG, AlphaSights and Guidepoint pay engineers by the call to brief investors on products and industries they know.
  • Forensic engineering firms. Failure analysis and expert witness work for insurers and law firms, paid hourly, usually with a PE license.
  • Engineering staffing agencies. Contract design and analysis roles through agencies such as Actalent, often full time for a fixed term.
  • Former employers and suppliers. Contract design work often starts with people who have already seen your drawings.

The screen is where these roles are won

Every marketplace above screens with an interview or assessment in your own domain before assigning paid work. Run that interview with Skillora first and get feedback on how you explained your reasoning, not just on what you said.
