CFD work where the deliverable is judgment

These remote CFD jobs pay for simulation judgment. AI models can recite the Navier-Stokes equations and still pick the wrong turbulence model, over-constrain an inlet, or call a case converged when the residuals only flattened. You catch that, explain it, and write the answer an experienced analyst would sign.

The listings split three ways. Review roles hand you CFD questions and model answers across meshing, turbulence, multiphase flow and heat transfer, and accept experience in any major solver, Fluent, STAR-CCM+ and COMSOL included. Task design roles pay you to write small CFD problems with an automatic checker and a reference solution, and require hands-on OpenFOAM. Aerodynamics roles have you run cases from the command line, such as an airfoil with lift and drag to compute, and require practical Python.

Most are hourly contracts you schedule yourself, and the larger ones are open worldwide. Some pay per accepted task with a weekly minimum, so read how a listing pays before you start.

CFD Engineer Jobs: Grading Simulation Reasoning

CFD engineer jobs in this section are review work. You solve and assess CFD problems across mesh generation, turbulence modeling, multiphase flow, heat transfer and solver setup, then judge whether an AI answer would survive a design review. Mesh independence, boundary conditions and convergence are the checks you apply.

The bar is practical: a degree in mechanical, aerospace or chemical engineering with a fluids focus, or about three years of validating CFD in industry. Any major solver counts, commercial or open source. Verification and validation practice, such as ASME V&V 20, is named as a plus.

OpenFOAM Jobs: Designing CFD Tasks for AI

These roles pay you to write bite-sized CFD exam problems. Each task has three parts: a precise problem statement, a deterministic checker that scores the model’s final answer, and a reference solution that proves the task is solvable. Topics include boundary condition selection, mesh quality, flow regime identification and simulation setup.

Hands-on OpenFOAM is the one hard requirement. No machine learning background is asked. Scripting in Python, Bash or MATLAB is a plus, and so is experience writing exam problems or technical assessments.

Remote Aerodynamics Jobs

Remote aerodynamics jobs here are hands-on. A typical task asks you to analyze an airfoil, build the domain and mesh, set boundary conditions, run the simulation, compute lift and drag, and decide whether the flow field is physically valid. Everything runs from the command line, so a grader can check the result automatically.

Practical Python is required, with an MS or PhD in aerospace, or in mechanical engineering with a fluids specialization, or a BS plus one to two years of aero-specific work. OpenFOAM, SU2 and Gmsh are among the named tools, and an equivalent scriptable tool is accepted.

Mechanical Engineering Jobs That Use CFD

Some mechanical engineering roles name CFD as part of the work, or as a plus, without putting it in the title. Expert review roles ask for experience with CAE, FEA and CFD or thermal simulation on physical hardware. Problem-writing roles ask for multi-step problems that span fluid dynamics, heat transfer and structural mechanics.

They hire more broadly than the CFD-titled roles. The remote mechanical engineer jobs page lists the rest of this field.

What the work looks like

A review task is a problem, a model’s answer and a rubric. You check the physics, the mesh strategy, the turbulence closure, the boundary conditions and the convergence claim, then write what a senior analyst would have done. A design task reverses it: you write the problem, the checker and the reference solution, and the model is graded against them.

The best tasks come from what goes wrong in real projects: the y-plus that was fine on the wing and wrong on the flap, the steady RANS case that hid vortex shedding. Several listings pay per accepted task with a weekly minimum, so first-time accuracy decides what you earn.

Never bring an employer’s geometry, data or results into a task. Check your employment contract for outside-work and invention clauses before you apply.

CFD AI training jobs, answered

Are there real remote CFD jobs?

Yes. The listings here are paid contracts with AI training marketplaces, and most publish an hourly rate up front. You solve, grade and write CFD problems for AI labs. You do not run a client’s simulations or sign off a design.

How much do remote CFD jobs pay?

The pay table on this page shows the live published range for each type of work. CFD-titled roles post some of the highest rates in engineering AI training work. Every rate comes from the listings themselves.

Do I need OpenFOAM?

For task design roles, yes: they require hands-on OpenFOAM. Review roles accept any major solver, including Fluent, STAR-CCM+ and COMSOL. Aerodynamics roles accept any tool you can drive from a command line or a script. The tag on each card shows what that listing asks for.

Do I need Python?

For aerodynamics roles, yes, because the tasks run through scripts. Task design roles call Python, Bash or MATLAB scripting a plus. Review roles mostly do not ask for it.

Do I need a master’s or a PhD?

Not always. Aerodynamics roles ask for an MS or PhD, or a BS plus one to two years of aero-specific work. Review roles accept a bachelor’s degree with a fluids focus or about three years of hands-on CFD. Task design roles prefer a BS or higher.

How do I get hired?

Apply through the listing and answer the screening questions. Most roles then run an AI interview, often about 30 minutes, before a hiring manager review. Answer as you would in a design review: state the assumptions, justify the mesh and the turbulence model, and say how you would know the result is wrong.

Other places to find remote CFD work

AI training is one market for CFD engineers who want remote, hourly work. These are the established routes to client work.

  • Simulation consultancies. CFD service firms take overflow analysis from clients and subcontract it to engineers they trust, often remotely.
  • Solver vendors and resellers. Ansys, Siemens and their channel partners hire contract application engineers for support, training and benchmark studies.
  • Upwork. CFD and thermal analysis projects from small businesses. You bid with paid Connects, and the service fee runs from 0% to 15% per contract.
  • Expert networks. GLG, AlphaSights and Guidepoint pay engineers by the call to brief investors on industries they know.
  • Engineering staffing agencies. Contract analysis roles through agencies, often full time for a fixed term.

The screen is where these roles are won

Every marketplace above screens with an interview or assessment in your own domain before assigning paid work. Run that interview with Skillora first and get feedback on how you explained your reasoning, not just on what you said.
