13 Upwork Alternatives by Profession, Plus the One Most Freelancers Miss

Upwork charges you before you get the job. Every proposal costs Connects, at $0.15 each, and you lose them when the client hires someone else. Win, and Upwork keeps 0% to 15% of the contract, at a rate its algorithm sets job by job.
Then it prices you against the world. Upwork's own cost pages put the median software developer at $20 an hour and the median accountant at $16.
So freelancers search for Upwork alternatives, and find lists written by marketplaces that rank themselves first. This one is sorted by what you do: software, engineering, law, finance and consulting, design and writing. For every site you get the fee, whether you bid, the gate you pass to get in, and who it suits.
One option here works nothing like Upwork, and most freelancers have never heard of it. AI labs pay professionals by the hour to test and correct their models. The rate is printed on the listing. Nobody bids. The platform finds the client. On 8 October 2026, micro1 listed BigLaw attorney roles at $140 to $400 an hour, and senior software, finance and consulting roles at $245 to $280.
Disclosure: Skillora runs a free AI training jobs board and may earn a referral fee when someone is hired through our links to micro1 or Mercor. It costs you nothing and does not change your rate. Those two lead this list because they are the only sites here with no bidding, no client hunting and the rate on the listing. Their downsides are listed as plainly as everyone else's.

Why freelancers are leaving Upwork

Four things changed, and each one costs you money or time.
The fee became a moving number. Until May 2025, Upwork took a flat 10%. New contracts now pay 0% to 15%, set by what Upwork's legal terms call "proprietary algorithms" weighing client demand, freelancer supply and job category. You see the rate when you send a proposal or receive an offer. You cannot plan a year around it.
You pay to pitch, and most pitches lose. Connects cost $0.15 each. Upwork does not publish how many a proposal costs: it varies by job and can rise while the post is open. You get nothing back when the client hires someone else or the post expires. UpHunt's 2026 analysis of 44,863 postings found that only 40% of jobs ever hired anyone.
You wait to get paid. Hourly work pays out about 10 days after the billing week ends. On fixed-price work, the client has 14 days to review, then a five-day security hold applies.
The market is shrinking. Upwork had 763,000 active clients in Q2 2026, down 4% in a year, and the money moving through the marketplace fell 3.6%. Upwork kept 19.6% of it, counting fees from both sides.
For a senior professional, the bigger cost is the rate. Upwork's medians are drawn from contracts worldwide, so a US engineer with 10 years of experience bids against the global price. The alternatives below either vet you and charge the client, or skip bidding entirely.
The Upwork alternative with no bidding: AI training work
AI labs pay professionals by the hour to test and correct their models. A corporate lawyer grades a model's markup of a merger agreement. A senior engineer writes a coding problem the model fails, plus the reference solution and the tests. A banker checks a model's valuation for the error a first-year analyst would make.
Most of this work never reaches Upwork. Marketplaces like micro1 and Mercor sell it to the labs and hire the experts. They run the opposite way to Upwork in four places:
- The rate is on the listing. You see $245 to $280 an hour before you apply, not after a negotiation.
- You apply once. One screen, usually a short AI interview and a skills test, puts you in the pool for every project in your field.
- Nobody bids against you. Every expert on a project is paid inside the published band. There is no race to the bottom.
- The platform finds the client. The client is an AI lab. You never write a proposal, a pitch or an invoice.
Skillora's AI training jobs board pulls every live listing from six of these marketplaces into one feed, sorted by pay. On 8 October 2026 it held 1,270 listings. Two marketplaces matter most for the professions on this page.
1. micro1
micro1 had 335 live listings on our feed, and most are open worldwide. Its law listings pay the most of any field: a typical listing runs $90 to $135 an hour, and BigLaw tracks reach $400. Three senior tracks pay $245 to $280 an hour, for software engineers, finance professionals and management consultants.
The gate is Zara, micro1's AI interviewer, which asks follow-up questions based on what you just said. Engineering roles add a proctored coding test of about 25 to 30 minutes. The micro1 review covers the company, and the micro1 AI interview guide covers how to pass. All live roles are on the micro1 jobs page.
Suits: senior professionals, including those outside the US, since few micro1 listings restrict by country. Watch for: the top tracks prefer a top company, a top-ranked university and residence in an English-speaking country.
2. Mercor
Mercor had 324 live listings. Its typical software listing pays $70 to $90 an hour, a higher floor than micro1's, and its finance listings reach $250. It charges experts nothing and takes no cut of the rate.
The gate is a 20 to 30 minute AI interview, plus a skills exercise on some roles. Mercor's Expert Senior SWE listing pays $100 for completing its two-hour exercise. Read the Mercor AI interview guide first, because a retake can replace your score. The Mercor review covers pay, the 2026 data breach and who gets matched. Live roles are on the Mercor jobs page.
Suits: experienced specialists who can wait to be matched. Watch for: passing the interview does not mean work. Some listings are standing talent pools, and many contractors pass and never hear back.
What AI training does not give you
The trade-offs are real. Know them before you apply:
- Projects end. Some run for months. Mercor's Expert Senior SWE listing says its contract "is expected to last 2-3 weeks".
- Some listings are pools, not jobs. Mercor's Legal Expert listing calls itself a standing listing that stays open whether or not a project is running.
- The screen is the gate. You usually get one strong attempt. How AI training platforms screen you shows all five gates.
- It is contract work. No benefits, no guaranteed hours, and you handle your own taxes.

Upwork alternatives for software developers
Upwork's cost pages put the median software developer at $20 an hour and the median Python developer at $30. A senior engineer gets nowhere bidding against those numbers. The sites below screen you once, then charge the client instead of you.
3. Toptal
Toptal does not take a cut of your rate. It bills the client on top and does not say how much. Its screen has five stages over three to eight weeks, including a one-to-three-week test project, and Toptal says fewer than 3% of applicants pass. Once you are in, Toptal matches you to clients. Nobody bids.
Suits: senior developers who want long engagements and can survive the screen. Watch for: passing does not schedule your first client, and you never see what the client pays for you.
4. Arc
Arc is free for developers. It takes nothing when you land a contract. Freelance applicants pass a communication test and a domain expertise interview, and Arc says 2.3% of candidates pass. Contracts usually run 20 to 40 hours a week for four weeks to a year. Arc's 2026 survey of 5,302 developers put senior freelancers at $75 to $150 an hour and staff or principal engineers at $120 to $220.
Suits: remote developers who want full-time-hours contracts. Watch for: Arc recommends you, but the client still interviews you.
Braintrust and Gun.io also charge developers nothing and bill the client instead. Both now lean toward enterprise products, so check what a new profile can apply to before you invest time.
AI training listings for developers
Software is the deepest AI training field after language work. Live roles on 8 October 2026:
- Senior Software Engineer, micro1: $245 to $280 an hour. Evaluate AI-written code and write hard coding problems with reference solutions and tests. Prefers a year or more at a top technology company in the past seven years.
- Open Source GitHub Maintainer, micro1: $150 to $300 an hour, about 15 hours a week. Review model-written patches for the repositories you maintain.
- Legacy Codebase Migration Expert, Mercor: $200 an hour. For engineers who have run large production migrations in finance, insurance, healthcare or telecom.
- Expert Senior SWE, Mercor: $150 to $210 an hour, about 20 hours a week. Asks for 10 or more years at top US tech firms.
- Backend Engineer Talent Network, Mercor: $70 to $150 an hour. A standing pool, matched as projects open.
Every live role is on the software engineering AI training jobs page. If you want the open source route, the coding side hustle guide walks through the three micro1 GitHub tracks.
Upwork alternatives for engineers
Upwork puts the median mechanical engineer at $35 an hour. Freelance engineering has few good marketplaces, because sealed work needs a license and, in most states, a registered firm. The freelance mechanical engineer guide shows why a solo engineer needs about $96 an hour to break even.
AI training is the one market here that pays for engineering judgment with no license question and no bid. Live roles on 8 October 2026:
- Mechanical Engineering Expert, micro1: $80 to $130 an hour, about 15 hours a week, open globally. Build and check simulation tasks through code and scripts.
- CFD Engineer, micro1: $50 to $150 an hour. Meshing, turbulence modeling, multiphase flow and solver setup.
- Mechanical Engineering Experts, Mercor: $100 to $120 an hour. For hands-on structural, thermal, design and controls engineers who have shipped physical products.
- Electrical and Hardware Engineering Experts, Mercor: $100 to $120 an hour. RF, power electronics, analog, PCB and signal integrity backgrounds.
Browse every engineering AI training listing, sorted by pay.
Upwork alternatives for lawyers
Upwork's median for contract law work is $75 an hour, with a typical range of $30 to $200. Few US lawyers will work at that rate, and the sites built for them do not ask you to.
5. Lawtrades
Lawtrades places US-licensed lawyers in contract roles with in-house legal teams. You propose your own rate for each role, and Lawtrades builds its fee into what the client pays. Profiles on its homepage show $225 an hour for mid-level counsel and $275 for senior, three times Upwork's median.
Suits: in-house and transactional lawyers who want months-long engagements. Watch for: you need a US license, and clients compare you against other candidates.
UpCounsel is the other option. It charges attorneys a membership plus 3.5% to 15% per transaction, and it is aimed at startups and small businesses rather than legal departments.
AI training listings for lawyers
Law has the highest typical rate of any field on our feed: $90 to $130 an hour across 58 listings. Live roles on 8 October 2026:
- Corporate Attorney (BigLaw Firms), micro1: $140 to $400 an hour. Review M&A, private equity and capital markets documents and grade a model's legal reasoning.
- Mergers and Acquisitions Attorney (BigLaw Firms), micro1: $140 to $400 an hour.
- Litigation Associate Attorney (BigLaw Firms), micro1: $140 to $400 an hour.
- Legal Expert (J.D./LL.B.), Mercor: $100 to $150 an hour. Draft a motion from a fact pattern, grade model-drafted contract and discovery work, and flag where a model states the law correctly and would still lose.
Every live role is on the law AI training jobs page. The side hustles for lawyers guide covers bar rules and malpractice coverage before you start.
Upwork alternatives for finance professionals and consultants
Upwork's medians are $16 an hour for accountants, $40 for CPAs and $35 for financial analysts. The sites below sell your experience by the engagement or the hour, at rates you set.
6. Paro
Paro matches US-based finance and accounting experts with companies that need fractional work. There is no fee to join, and you set your own rate. The screen is an application, an interview, an assessment and third-party verification. You must carry E&O insurance and commit 15 to 20 hours a week at minimum.
Suits: fractional CFOs, controllers, FP&A leads and bookkeepers. Watch for: Paro does not take experts based in California or Massachusetts, and it does not publish its own cut.
7. Catalant
Catalant connects independent consultants with corporate projects. It charges its fee to the client and tells you to set your rate without it. You do pitch: clients review pitches from several experts, interview, then ask for a proposal. Payment arrives on net-60 terms. Catalant counts more than 115,000 consultants in its network.
Suits: former strategy consultants and boutique firms. Watch for: 60 days is a long wait, and pitching is unpaid work, the same as on Upwork.
8. GLG and AlphaSights
Expert networks pay you to talk to investors and consultants about your industry. You set an hourly rate, the network finds the client, and you are paid for the time on the call. GLG says it has paid its members more than $1 billion since 1999. AlphaSights pays your agreed rate pro rata on 30-day terms, and warns that high rates lead to lower demand.
Suits: senior operators with niche industry knowledge. Watch for: calls are sporadic. This is income on top, not a living.
AI training listings for finance and consulting
Live roles on 8 October 2026:
- Investment and Finance Expert, micro1: $245 to $280 an hour. For investment banking, private equity, venture and hedge fund professionals. Grade a model's valuation and investment reasoning.
- Investment Banking Expert, micro1: $175 to $300 an hour. Comparable company analysis, buyer screening and Excel valuation models.
- Equity Research Expert, Mercor: $150 to $250 an hour, about 20 hours a week. For former lead sell-side analysts.
- Finance Expert, Mercor: $100 to $150 an hour. Five or more years at a top firm in the US, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Grade AI-made slides, spreadsheets and documents.
- Management Consultant, micro1: $245 to $280 an hour. For alumni of McKinsey, Bain, BCG and similar firms.
Every live role is on the finance AI training jobs page and the business and consulting page. Accountants should read side hustles for accountants, which sorts 15 options by what you sell.
Upwork alternatives for designers and writers
AI training pays less for creative work than for the professions above, so the marketplaces below are the better bet here.
9. 99designs
99designs runs design contests and one-to-one projects. On one-to-one work it keeps 15% at Entry Level, 10% at Mid Level and 5% at Top Level, plus a $100 introduction fee per new client, spread over that client's first $500. A curation team reviews every designer and sets your level. Payouts arrive within three business days.
Suits: logo, brand identity and packaging designers. Watch for: contests mean doing the work before you know you will be paid.
10. Contently
Contently matches vetted writers with brands, now mostly in finance, healthcare and insurance. Editors assign or offer work. Nobody bids, and writers pay no fee. Contently's published starting rates run from $300 for a short article to $1,250 for a long report.
Suits: writers with a credential, such as a CFA, CPA or law degree, who can explain a regulated topic. Watch for: volume depends on which brands pick you, and Contently earns by marking up what it bills the client.
Sites like Fiverr
Fiverr flips Upwork's model. You do not pitch. You list a packaged service, a "gig", and buyers order it. Here is what Fiverr costs and who it suits, followed by the other sites like Fiverr worth a profile.
11. Fiverr
Fiverr had 2.7 million active buyers in the year to June 2026. You publish a gig with fixed packages and prices, and buyers order it. A hand-vetted tier, Fiverr Pro, lets you price gigs up to $20,000 and custom offers up to $50,000.
Suits: anyone who can sell a repeatable deliverable at a fixed price, such as a logo, an edit, an audit or a set-scope build. Watch for: a 20% fee, a two-week wait for your money, and a buyer base that is shrinking.
Fiverr fees for sellers
Fiverr keeps 20% of every order, including Gig Extras and tips. On a $100 order you earn $80. Fiverr Pro gigs pay the same 80%. The buyer pays separately: a 5.5% service fee, plus a small-order fee on cheaper orders.
Then you wait. Earnings clear 14 days after an order completes, or 7 days for Top Rated, Pro and Seller Plus sellers. Top Rated sellers and Seller Plus Premium members can pay 1% to get the money early. Withdrawing costs nothing to PayPal, $1 to a bank through Payoneer and $3 to a Payoneer account.
Seller Plus is an optional subscription. It costs $15 a month for new sellers, $25 for Standard and $49 for Premium. Standard buys the 7-day clearance, analytics and a $5 monthly ads credit.
Levels raise your ranking, and they take volume to earn:
- Level 1: 5 orders, 3 clients and $400 earned.
- Level 2: 20 orders, 10 clients and $2,000 earned.
- Top Rated: 40 orders, 20 clients, $10,000 earned and a manual review.
Is Fiverr worth it?
It is worth it if you can sell big orders, and less so every quarter if you cannot. Fiverr's own Q2 2026 results show the split.
- Fewer buyers. 2.7 million annual active buyers in Q2 2026, down 22% from 3.4 million a year earlier.
- Bigger orders. Each buyer spent $368 on average, up 16%. Clients completing projects above $1,000 grew 13%.
- AI is eating the small gigs. Fiverr blamed weakness in the categories "most exposed to AI automation", and cut about 30% of its staff in September 2025 to refocus on AI.
So Fiverr is worth it for a seller with a high-ticket, packaged service that AI cannot do alone, ideally with a Pro badge. It is a poor bet for small writing, translation or basic design gigs: fewer buyers, 20% off the top and a two-week wait.
For a professional with years in a field, the better question is whether to sell gigs at all. Fiverr's average buyer spends $368 a year. Two hours at micro1's senior rate of $245 pays more than that.
12. Freelancer.com
Freelancer.com is the closest copy of Upwork. Clients post projects and freelancers bid. It keeps 10% of a fixed-price project, or $5 if that is more, and 10% of hourly payments. Free accounts get six bids a month. Paid plans add bids, from $4.99 a month for 50 to $99 a month for 1,500. It also runs contests, where entry is free and the winner pays 10%.
Suits: freelancers who want Upwork's volume at a lower fee. Watch for: it is the same bidding race, with paid plans to buy more tickets.
13. Contra
Contra charges freelancers no commission. You build a portfolio, clients find you, and you apply to jobs in its network without price bidding. Contra Pro costs $29 a month or $199 a year and unlocks unlimited job applications.
Suits: designers, developers and creatives with strong portfolios. Watch for: fewer clients than Fiverr, so it works best as a place to send people you already know.
More sites like Fiverr
- PeoplePerHour. UK-focused. Takes 20% of your first few hundred pounds with each buyer, then 7.5%, then 3.5% above £5,000. Gives 15 free proposals a month.
- Guru. Takes a 5% to 9% job fee, lower on paid plans. The free plan gives 10 bids a month.
- Dribbble. For designers. Since February 2026 it takes 10% of the first $500 of a project, 7% up to $1,000 and 4% above that, or nothing on an annual Pro Standard or Pro Plus plan.
- Malt. For Europe. Takes 10% with clients you meet there and 5% once you have worked with a client for six months.
Which Upwork alternative fits you
- You are a senior lawyer, engineer, banker or consultant. Apply to micro1 and Mercor first. They are the only options here with no bidding, no client hunting and the rate printed before you apply.
- You are a developer who wants a long contract. Apply to Toptal and Arc, and keep an AI training profile live while their screens run.
- You sell finance or accounting hours. Paro for fractional roles, Catalant for projects, an expert network for occasional calls.
- You design or write. 99designs, Contently or Contra, depending on whether you prefer contests, assignments or inbound clients.
- You want Upwork's volume without its fees. Fiverr if you can package your service, Freelancer.com if you would rather keep bidding.
Most experts should run two at once. Projects end on every platform, and the second one is your floor. Start with the AI training jobs board, filter by your field, and sort by pay.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Upwork?
It depends on what you sell. For senior lawyers, engineers, finance professionals and consultants, AI training marketplaces like micro1 and Mercor pay the most and need no bidding: law listings on our feed typically pay $90 to $130 an hour. Developers who want long contracts should apply to Toptal and Arc. Designers do best on 99designs, Contra or Dribbble, writers on Contently, and anyone with a packaged service on Fiverr.
Is there an Upwork alternative with no fees?
Several charge freelancers nothing. Contra takes no commission. Toptal, Arc, Braintrust and Gun.io charge the client instead of you. micro1 and Mercor pay the rate printed on the listing and take nothing from it. The catch is the gate: the sites that are free to you screen hard, while the open marketplaces that let anyone in charge 10% to 20%.
How much does Upwork charge freelancers in 2026?
Between 0% and 15% of each contract. Upwork has set the rate per contract since May 2025 and shows it when you send a proposal or receive an offer. Contracts that started before May 2025 keep the old flat 10%. On top of the fee, every proposal costs Connects at $0.15 each. Withdrawals to a US bank are free, and a US-dollar wire costs $50.
Is Fiverr better than Upwork?
Fiverr suits sellers who can package a service at a fixed price, because buyers come to you and you never write a proposal. It costs more: a flat 20% of every order against Upwork's 0% to 15%, and earnings take 14 days to clear. Upwork suits open-ended and hourly work. Neither suits a senior professional who wants to be paid for expertise rather than volume.
What is AI training work, and is it legit?
AI labs hire professionals to write problems, reference answers and grades that teach their models. Marketplaces like micro1 and Mercor hire for this, publish hourly rates on the listings, and pay contractors directly. Mercor was valued at $10 billion in October 2025. The real risks are uneven volume and projects that end without warning, not missing pay.
Which Upwork alternative is best for beginners?
Fiverr and Freelancer.com let anyone in, and Fiverr's Level 1 badge needs only five orders and $400 earned. Vetted networks and the top AI training roles want years of experience. Generalist AI training work on platforms like DataAnnotation and Alignerr starts around $20 to $40 an hour, and the best AI training jobs guide ranks the platforms that hire without a specialist background.
