Upwork vs Fiverr: The Platform That Charges You to Lose

Upwork charges you to try. Fiverr charges you for winning.
Most Upwork vs Fiverr comparisons, or Fiverr vs Upwork ones, stop at the fee percentages. They note that Upwork charges 0% to 15% per contract while Fiverr takes a flat 20% cut. Yet looking only at headline rates hides the fundamental question: who pays for the deals you lose? This guide gives you the exact fee math on a $1,000 job, maps which platform suits which profession using Upwork's own median rates, examines the 2026 contraction from both companies' SEC filings, and evaluates a third option that eliminates client bidding entirely.
Fiverr fits sellers who can package a repeatable deliverable at a set price, such as logos, voiceovers, or standard audits. Upwork suits open-ended, hourly engagements where clients need custom roadmaps. Both platforms force experienced professionals to compete against global medians where Upwork's own median for software developers is $20 an hour. A third path now lets specialists earn published hourly rates with zero platform fees.
Disclosure: Skillora runs a free AI training jobs board and may earn a referral fee when someone is hired through our links to micro1 or Mercor. It costs you nothing and does not change your rate. We earn nothing from Upwork, Fiverr or Freelancer.com.

What Upwork and Fiverr keep from your pay

Fiverr takes 20% of every order. You earn 80% of the purchase amount, including Gig Extras and client tips. On a $100 order with a $20 tip, Fiverr takes $24, leaving you $96. Fiverr Pro gigs pay the same 80%. Buyers pay separately: a 5.5% service fee plus a small-order fee on cheaper purchases.
Upwork uses a sliding Freelancer Service Fee from 0% to 15% per contract, set by Upwork and locked once a proposal, offer, or contract begins. It applies to hourly work, fixed-price milestones, Project Catalog sales, and bonuses. Introduced in May 2025, it replaced a flat 10% rate; pre-May 2025 contracts keep that 10%. Upwork notes that to net $20 an hour at a 10% fee, you must bill $22.22.
On a $1,000 project, the split works as follows:
- On Fiverr, the client pays $1,000 plus a $55 fee. Fiverr deducts $200. You keep $800.
- On Upwork, the client pays $1,000. Upwork takes $0 to $150. You keep $850 to $1,000.
Upwork's fee can be lower and still cost you more, because you pay for proposals you lose. Submitting proposals requires Connects, priced at $0.15 each in bundles. Connects return only if the client cancels without hiring or Upwork pulls the post for terms violations. They do not return when a client rejects you, hires a competitor, lets the post expire, or when you withdraw. Spending 100 Connects across ten unsuccessful pitches costs $15 out of pocket.
Payouts follow distinct clearance rules:
- Upwork hourly: Arrives about 10 days after the billing week closes.
- Upwork fixed-price: Up to 14 days for client review, plus a 5-day security hold. US bank transfers are free; US-dollar wires cost $50.
- Fiverr clearance: Clears in 14 days, or 7 days for Top Rated, Pro, and Seller Plus members. Early Payout offers instant access for a 1% fee. PayPal withdrawals are free, bank transfers cost $1 via Payoneer, and Payoneer transfers cost $3.
- Fiverr subscriptions: Seller Plus costs $15 monthly for new sellers, $25 for Standard (includes 7-day clearance and $5 ad credit), and $49 for Premium.
How work reaches you: proposals vs gigs
Upwork relies primarily on proposals. Clients post projects and freelancers pitch. A 2026 study by UpHunt reviewing 44,863 Upwork job posts found that only 40% of jobs ever hired anyone. The other 60% never hired anyone. Connects spent on a post that expires without a hire do not come back.
Upwork also offers Project Catalog, a gig storefront where you list fixed-price services across three tiers (Starter, Standard, Advanced) priced from $5 to $500,000. Upwork reviews each project before publication, and the same 0% to 15% fee applies. You can run 20 projects simultaneously.
Fiverr centers on passive orders. You create gig listings and buyers purchase them. Levels raise your ranking, and they take volume to earn:
- Level 1: 5 orders, 3 clients, $400 earned.
- Level 2: 20 orders, 10 clients, $2,000 earned.
- Top Rated: 40 orders, 20 clients, $10,000 earned, and manual review.
- Fiverr Pro: A hand-vetted tier that lets you price gigs up to $20,000 and custom offers up to $50,000.
Fiverr Briefs lets buyers post a project that Fiverr shares with matching sellers, who send tailored offers. So Fiverr now has a pitching side too.
The choice depends on whether your deliverable sells off a menu. Standardized tasks fit Fiverr without preliminary discussions. Open-ended work with custom milestones fits Upwork.
Upwork or Fiverr: which suits your profession
Upwork's published cost-to-hire data shows worldwide median hourly rates for common disciplines:
| Median band | Roles and Upwork's median |
|---|---|
| Under $21 | Virtual assistant $13, bookkeeper $15, accountant $16, software developer $20, translator $20, WordPress developer $20, social media manager $20 |
| $21 to $30 | Web designer $21, SEO expert $21, graphic designer $25, logo designer $25, content writer $25, editor $25, illustrator $25, animator $25, UX designer $27, mobile app developer $27, copywriter $30, Python developer $30, web developer $30, data analyst $30, technical writer $30 |
| $35 and up | Financial analyst $35, mechanical engineer $35, marketing consultant $35, data scientist $50, voice actor $55, business consultant $55, tax preparer $60 |
Packaged deliverables suit Fiverr. Logo designers, voice actors, video editors, and audio producers thrive with fixed-scope tiers. Ongoing engagements suit Upwork. Software development, bookkeeping, virtual assistance, and consulting require flexible hourly contracts. However, both platforms benchmark you against international medians, leaving experienced professionals underpriced on open listings.
Both marketplaces shrank in 2026
Financial filings from Q2 2026 reveal user contraction across both platforms.
Fiverr reported 2.7 million annual active buyers in Q2 2026, dropping 22% from 3.4 million a year earlier. Fiverr cut approximately 30% of its staff in September 2025 to refocus on AI. However, remaining buyers spent more: spend per buyer grew 16% to $368 annually, and contracts over $1,000 rose 13%. In its filing, Fiverr blamed weakness in categories "most exposed to AI automation". On Fiverr, the small orders are under pressure while big projects grow.
Upwork shrank more gradually. Its Q2 2026 filing showed 763,000 active clients, down 4% year over year. Gross services volume fell 3.6%. Upwork retained 19.6% of marketplace volume across combined client and freelancer fees.
For sellers, the lesson from both filings is the same: the buyers who stayed are buying bigger projects.
Upwork vs Fiverr vs Freelancer.com
Freelancer.com mirrors Upwork's competitive bidding format. Freelancers submit proposals on client listings.
Freelancer.com charges 10% or $5 (whichever is greater) on fixed-price projects and 10% on hourly work. Free plans include only 6 monthly bids. Paid plans range from $4.99 monthly for 50 bids to $99 for 1,500 bids. Contests are free to enter, with winners paying 10%.
In H1 2026, Freelancer's marketplace gross volume fell 20.3% to A$42.4 million (down 11.7% in constant currency). Revenue dropped 23.2% to A$14.9 million. The company cited fraud controls that blocked legitimate accounts, AI scrapers harming search traffic, and a payment gateway migration.
Freelancer.com's flat 10% can beat Upwork's top rate of 15%. But you still bid, you get 6 free bids a month, and its marketplace shrank faster than Upwork's in 2026. For broader options, read our guide to 13 Upwork alternatives by profession.
The third option: AI expert work with no bidding
AI research labs hire subject-matter specialists by the hour to benchmark and train frontier models. Experts write difficult prompts that models fail, construct reference solutions, and grade outputs. Senior engineers evaluate code, bankers check financial models, and designers assess user interfaces.
Platforms like micro1 and Mercor manage these contracts. This model differs from Upwork and Fiverr in four ways:
- The rate is on the listing: Pay rates appear before you apply.
- Apply once: A single evaluation replaces continuous pitching.
- Nobody bids against you: Specialists earn within the stated pay range.
- The platform finds the client: The client is an AI lab. You never write a proposal or an invoice.
- No cut: micro1 and Mercor charge experts nothing and take nothing from the listed rate.
The money is real. The Information reported Mercor achieved roughly $2 billion in annual gross revenue by June 2026. Bloomberg reported in July 2026 that Mercor paid contractors "over $4 million a day". Mercor reached a $10 billion valuation in October 2025. Payouts arrive every Wednesday via Stripe or Wise, following an initial 7-day hold on Stripe.

What it does not give you
AI training involves clear structural constraints:
- Contract length: Projects end, sometimes after a few weeks.
- Talent pools: Some postings maintain standing benches rather than instant work.
- Strict gates: Initial screenings serve as single-attempt hurdles. micro1 uses an AI interviewer named Zara that asks adaptive follow-ups, while Mercor uses a 20 to 30 minute automated interview. See our guide to AI training platform screening.
- High standards: The top roles ask for years of experience, and some prefer a top company or university. Some Mercor roles are open only to US residents. It is not a beginner's marketplace.
- Independent contractor status: It is contract work: no benefits, no guaranteed hours, and you handle your own taxes.
AI training rates by field, against Upwork's medians

The pay differential between Upwork and AI platforms varies by field. The gap is largest where Upwork's median sits furthest below a career salary, such as software development ($20 on Upwork vs $70 to $90 on Mercor) and finance ($35 on Upwork vs $80 to $110). The margin narrows for creatives: a graphic designer's $25 Upwork median sits at the bottom of micro1's typical design band, and a voice actor's $55 Upwork median sits inside Mercor's voice band. For creatives, the advantage is the higher ceiling and the missing bid, not the typical rate.
