Is Upwork Worth It? What 6 in 10 Postings Never Do

You submit a proposal and wait. Days pass. The client interviews nobody, hires no one, and lets the post expire. Your Connects are gone. That is the most common ending. UpHunt re-read 44,863 Upwork postings after they closed, and 6 in 10 never hired anyone.

Freelancers asking is Upwork worth it usually argue about the fee. That misses the real cost. Upwork charges its service fee only when you get paid. Connects cost money whether anyone hires or not. When a post expires without a contract, Upwork keeps your money.

Upwork is worth it for freelancers with established reviews and narrow specialties. For others, bidding is an expensive gamble. You can sell those same skills without bidding. Platforms on Skillora's AI training jobs board hire qualified professionals at set hourly rates with no proposals, pitches, or Connects.

Disclosure: Skillora runs a free AI training jobs board and may earn a referral fee when someone is hired through our links to micro1, Mercor or Alignerr. It costs you nothing and does not change your rate. Skillora earns nothing from Upwork.

Is Upwork worth it? The short verdict

Upwork is worth it if:

  • You work in a niche with few proposals per hire, such as Legal, Design, or Engineering.
  • You have established reviews and earnings.
  • You can bid within the first hour a job appears.
  • You bring existing clients through Direct Contracts for lower fees.

Upwork is not worth it if:

  • You compete in crowded fields like admin support or entry writing against global rates.
  • You rely on free Connects.
  • You cannot spend $21.60 to $59.40 in Connects to win one hire.
  • You need cash immediately, given 14-day client reviews and five-day payment holds.

What Upwork costs freelancers

Upwork charges a Freelancer Service Fee of 0% to 15% per contract. You see the rate before you send a proposal or accept an offer. Once sent, that rate is locked. Upwork offers no regular fee discounts. Under its own math, taking home $20 an hour at a 10% fee means charging $22.22.

Until May 2025, Upwork charged a flat 10%, as noted in Skillora's guide to Upwork alternatives. If you bring your own clients through Direct Contracts, you pay a reduced fee, which drops to 0% with Freelancer Plus.

Payouts take time. Withdrawals to a US bank are free, but a US-dollar wire costs $50. Hourly work pays out about 10 days after the billing week ends. Fixed-price contracts give clients 14 days to review work, followed by a five-day security hold. That means waiting up to 19 days before money is available.

You also compete against worldwide pricing. Upwork's own pages put the median software developer at $20 an hour and the median accountant at $16 an hour.

Yet the fee applies only to money you earn. Connects cost money before you win.

Upwork Connects cost: the true price of winning work

Is Upwork worth it chart: 6 in 10 Upwork postings ended without a hire in UpHunt's 44,863-posting census; about 11 proposals per hire at an 18-Connect, $2.70 working price puts the Upwork Connects cost per hire at $29.70
What one Upwork hire costs in Connects before you earn anything, at the market average.

Connects are virtual tokens freelancers spend to submit proposals, boost proposals, and turn on the Availability Badge. According to the Upwork help center, Connects cost $0.15 each and sell in bundles. Buying them requires a verified billing method on file, even if you pay from your Upwork balance.

The number of Connects a proposal needs varies by job and can change while the post is open. Upwork bases this on project size, scope, and market demand.

Upwork offers limited ways to get free Connects:

  • A one-time bonus of 50 Connects after buying Connects or subscribing to Freelancer Plus.
  • 10 free Connects a month for some freelancers.
  • 30 Connects per talent badge, up to 90 total.
  • 12 free Connects under a test reward when you submit three or more proposals and spend at least 54 Connects doing so.

Upwork refunds Connects only as platform credit, never cash. You receive credits if a client cancels a project before making a contract, or if Upwork removes the post for terms violations. Upwork does not refund Connects when a client rejects you, hires someone else, lets the job expire without a hire, or when you withdraw your proposal. Unused Connects roll over and expire after one year, according to Upwork.

Upwork does not publish an average Connects cost per proposal. However, its active bidder test requires spending at least 54 Connects across three proposals, which works out to 18 Connects, or $2.70, per proposal. Treat this $2.70 figure as a working assumption, not an official Upwork average.

This table shows what landing a hire costs across categories based on proposal counts and our $2.70 working price.

Data from UpHunt explains why bidding gets expensive. UpHunt sampled 44,863 randomly selected Upwork postings and re-read them after they closed. A full 60% of postings ended without a single hire. Only 40% hired anyone. Connects you spend on an expired post are gone.

UpHunt counted about 11 proposals for every hire market-wide. At our working price of $2.70 per proposal, winning one job costs about $29.70 in Connects. That ranges from $21.60 in Legal (8 proposals per hire) to $59.40 in Admin Support (22 proposals per hire). A new freelancer without reviews should expect to send more proposals than average before landing work.

Upwork Connects price, bundles, and Freelancer Plus

The Upwork Connects price is $0.15 each, sold in bundles.

A Freelancer Plus subscription costs $19.99 a month through Upwork or $27 through the Apple App Store. The plan gives you 100 Connects a month and adds proposal insights, job alerts, and Uma access.

At the 18-Connect working price, 100 Connects buys about five proposals a month. That is fewer than the 11 the market averages per hire. A busy bidder will likely buy more.

Why are my Upwork proposals not being viewed?

Four structural reasons explain why clients ignore your pitches.

First, you applied late. UpHunt found that 59% of proposals arrive in the first hour. The median job reaches five proposals in about 20 minutes and six by the one-hour mark. Web design jobs draw 29 proposals within the first hour. Most proposals are already in by then.

Second, up to four boosted proposals sit above yours. Under Upwork's boost rules, the top four bidders get the top four slots. A proposal stays boosted until the client interacts with it or another bidder outbids it. Clients pay nothing and cannot turn boosts off, according to Upwork's client-side guide.

Third, the client may never hire anyone. Six in 10 Upwork postings close without a single hire.

Fourth, seeing whether a client opens proposals requires Freelancer Plus. Only paid subscribers see proposal insights. On a free account, you cannot tell if a client opens anything.

Before spending Connects, run Upwork's own checks. Look at whether the client has already hired, how many freelancers they plan to hire, the client's history and feedback, and the current activity on the post.

How long does it take to get your first job on Upwork?

Upwork publishes no official timeline. Count proposals, not days.

UpHunt counted about 11 proposals per hire market-wide, rising to 20 in web development and 22 in admin support. A new profile with no reviews should expect to send more than that average.

The 10 monthly Connects Upwork offers to some freelancers cover about half of one 18-Connect proposal. By basic arithmetic, most new freelancers will buy Connects in their first week.

Getting paid also takes time: payout adds about 10 days on hourly work and up to 19 days on fixed-price projects.

Four habits speed up the process:

  1. Bid in the first hour.
  2. Favour fixed-price jobs, which hire about 39% of the time compared to 24% for hourly listings.
  3. Favour categories with fewer proposals per hire.
  4. Bid on posts where the client has hired before.

Is Upwork dead in 2026?

Upwork is not dead. Its Q2 2026 SEC filing reported gross services volume of $966.4 million, down 3.6% from a year earlier. Revenue fell 2% to $191.7 million. Active clients dropped 4% to 763,000 from 796,000. Upwork guided third-quarter 2026 revenue to $176 million to $184 million.

Yet the clients who stay spend more. Gross services volume per active client reached a record $5,230, up 5%, marking its eighth straight quarter of sequential growth. Gross services volume from AI-related work grew more than 22% year over year, and AI Strategy & Consulting grew over 50%.

Upwork still moves almost a billion dollars a quarter. It has fewer clients, each spending more. AI-related work is where it grows.

What to do when your Upwork account is suspended

Upwork suspends or restricts accounts for Terms of Service violations. According to the Upwork account suspension appeal guide, a temporary restriction lets you log in and finish current work, but features such as applying to jobs or withdrawing funds may be disabled. A block shuts you out of the account completely. Upwork sends an on-platform notice and an email explaining the violation. Check your spam folder.

Follow these steps:

  1. Check for self-serve fixes. You can resolve some causes yourself, including identity verification issues or payment method errors.
  2. Review your messages. Under Upwork's outside payment policy, asking a client to pay outside Upwork violates terms, even if the payment never happens.
  3. Gather new documentation. Upwork approves appeals when it made a mistake or when you provide new information that materially changes findings. Appeals that only express disagreement are unlikely to succeed.
  4. Submit your appeal. Upwork says most are reviewed within two business days. If Upwork denies the appeal and marks the case final, further appeals may be blocked unless new information appears.
  5. Never create a new account. Opening a replacement profile after a suspension is itself a Terms of Service violation.

How to find clients as a freelancer

According to MBO Partners, word of mouth is the most common way independent professionals find work at 53%, while 47% used an online marketplace in the past 12 months. Relying on a single job board leaves you vulnerable. Use multiple channels:

  • Word of mouth: Contact former employers, colleagues, and past clients directly. Referrals cost no Connects and carry no platform fees.
  • Direct Contracts on Upwork: Bring independent clients onto the platform through Direct Contracts. You pay a reduced fee, which drops to 0% with Freelancer Plus.
  • Strategic Upwork bidding: Submit proposals during the first hour on fixed-price posts from clients who have hired before. Focus on categories with fewer proposals per hire.
  • Vetted talent networks: Explore curated platforms in Skillora's guide to Upwork alternatives. These networks screen freelancers up front rather than running public bidding queues.
  • AI training marketplaces: Remove client acquisition entirely through Skillora's AI training jobs board. You pass one skills screen and enter a pool for projects with set hourly pay.

The option with no bidding: AI training work

AI training jobs pay by field compared with Upwork categories: typical listings from $25 to $40 for writing up to $90 to $130 for law, against Upwork median rates of $20 for software developers and $16 for accountants
Typical AI training listing by field, Skillora feed, 8 October 2026.

AI labs pay professionals by the hour to test and correct their models through marketplaces such as micro1, Mercor, and Alignerr. A lawyer grades a model's contract markup. A senior engineer writes a coding problem with reference solutions and tests. A finance professional checks a model's valuation. An editor rewrites model prose.

These marketplaces run the opposite way to Upwork:

  • The rate is printed on the listing before you apply.
  • You apply once, usually through a short AI interview plus a skills test, to qualify for projects in your field.
  • Nobody bids against you.
  • The platform finds the client, so you send no proposals, pitches, or invoices.

Skillora's AI training jobs board pulls live listings from six of these marketplaces into one feed, sortable by pay. On 8 October 2026, it held 1,270 listings, and 521 of them paid $100 an hour or more at the top of their range.

Named live listings on 8 October 2026 include:

  • Senior Software Engineer, micro1: $245 to $280 an hour
  • Expert Senior SWE, Mercor: $150 to $210 an hour
  • Corporate Attorney (BigLaw Firms), micro1: $140 to $400 an hour
  • Investment Banking Expert, micro1: $175 to $300 an hour

  • Senior Product Designer, UI/UX, Mercor: $80 to $110 an hour
  • English Writing Generalist, Alignerr: $30 to $40 an hour

Upwork's median software developer is $20 an hour, while the typical software listing on the AI feed pays $50 to $90 an hour.

The work has real downsides:

  • Projects end, some after weeks.
  • Some listings are standing talent pools rather than open jobs, so passing the screen does not guarantee work.
  • You usually get one strong attempt at the screen. Prepare with our guide on how AI training platforms screen you.
  • It is contract work with no benefits, and you handle your own taxes.
  • Writers, translators, and designers earn less than lawyers, engineers, and finance professionals. The $280 top rate in language is a German voice acting role, not writing. Admin support and customer service freelancers have no direct equivalent in AI training.

So, is Upwork worth it for you?

Stay on Upwork if:

  • You have client reviews and talent badges.
  • You work in categories like Legal with few proposals per hire.
  • You can apply within the first hour of a posting.
  • You bring your own clients through Direct Contracts for lower fees.

Look beyond Upwork if:

  • You spend more on Connects than you earn from contracts.
  • You bid in crowded fields like Admin Support against global rates.
  • You would rather not pay to bid in a market where 6 in 10 postings never hire.
  • You want published hourly rates with no bidding or pitching.
