Is Meridial Legit? Why Physics PhDs and Translators Share One Rate

The same pay line ($6 to $65 an hour) appears on 652 of Meridial's 827 public listings, from a US accounting role to a physics role to Somali translation, so the listing cannot tell you your rate. Meridial is legit. It is the real expert marketplace run by Invisible Technologies, a company valued at over $2 billion that has trained models for OpenAI. Meridial AI contracts specialists directly to work on frontier AI projects.
The real questions are what you will be paid and whether work will arrive. Both are decided after you are screened, not on the listing. Meridial sets pay rates per project based on your location and background. Over 90 percent of the listings date back before May 2026, functioning as standing talent pools rather than immediate openings. Many applicants complete multi-part assessments only to wait weeks for verification or sit with zero active tasks.
This review covers Meridial pay, the public job board, the screening process, contributor feedback on Reddit, and better-paid micro1 and Mercor listings.
Disclosure: Skillora may earn a referral fee from micro1, Mercor and Alignerr if you apply through our links and go on to work there. It costs you nothing and does not change the rates quoted here, which come from each platform's own listings. Meridial pays us nothing.
Is Meridial legit? What checks out and what does not
Meridial is a legitimate contractor marketplace backed by a large enterprise vendor. It also has steep operational flaws.
What checks out:
- Corporate scale: Francis Pedraza founded Invisible Technologies in 2015. CEO Matt Fitzpatrick is a former McKinsey executive. Invisible raised $100 million in September 2025 at a valuation over $2 billion per Bloomberg. Sacra estimated $134 million in annualized revenue at the end of 2024, up 123% year on year.
- Client base: Invisible has delivered RLHF work for OpenAI since 2022.
- Biweekly payments: Meridial charges no fee to join. Its FAQ states that every minute spent on a project is compensated, with payments issued every two weeks. A US worker on r/Meridial on 8 April 2026 confirmed getting paid biweekly with no issues across six projects.
What does not check out:
- Poor review scores: Meridial holds a 1.5 rating out of 5 on Trustpilot across 35 reviews. 88% of reviewers give it one star. Meridial's Trustpilot page states that the company has not replied to negative reviews.
- Verification hurdles: Many applicants report automated identity verification rejections. Submitted address documents frequently sit stuck for weeks.
- No work guarantees: Meridial explicitly offers no guarantee of work. Passing screening does not guarantee project invitations.
- Abrupt cuts: Business Insider reported in April 2023 that Invisible let go 31 contract trainers who worked on OpenAI projects.
Is Invisible Technologies legit?
Yes. Meridial is the expert marketplace powered directly by Invisible Technologies, so they are the same company. The primary risk for qualified contractors is idle time without project assignments, not wage theft.
What is Meridial AI?
Meridial is the expert contractor marketplace run by Invisible Technologies. It was previously called the Invisible Expert Marketplace. The platform matches domain specialists with projects from frontier AI labs. Most work focuses on RLHF and SFT tasks. These tasks include writing prompts, evaluations, ranking responses, and red-teaming. Contributors also build reinforcement learning environments. That work involves environment design, judge model calibration, and edge cases.
Company figures cite 10 years of operations across 120+ countries, 700+ projects, 12+ domains, and 110+ languages. You work as an independent contractor. You receive no employee benefits, health insurance, or paid time off. You must supply your own computer and internet connection. Meridial does not sponsor visas or support F-1/OPT and H-1B work authorization.
The public board also carries 74 outsourced operations roles paying $5 to $6 an hour. These listings include custody operations, payroll, and customer support in the Philippines, India, Jamaica, and Colombia. They are back-office support positions, not AI training at all.
How much does Meridial pay?

Most Meridial listings do not give a fixed rate. Of 827 live listings, 652 (79 percent) display either "$6 to $65" or "$8 to $65" per hour. Meridial states that your exact rate is determined after evaluating your experience, expertise, and geographic location. The company also notes that final offer amounts may vary. That identical band covers very different roles. It appears on US Accounting Specialist, US Physics Specialist (where a master's or PhD is ideal), US Mathematics Specialist, Python coding, Registered Nurse, and hundreds of language listings. In the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, 131 out of 171 listings carry this same range.
A few roles list distinct pay ranges instead:
- Mergers & Acquisitions Attorney: up to $200 per hour
- SWE Infrastructure Specialist: $80 to $150 per hour
- Medical Doctor (US, UK): $40 to $120 per hour
- Attorney Specialist, Legal Counsel Specialist, and Litigation Specialist: $50 to $75 per hour
- AI Generalist (No Experience Required, US): $20 per hour
Pay offers reported so far sit well below the $65 ceiling. One contributor reported receiving a lowest offer of $20 per hour as a US generalist in r/Meridial on 8 Apr 2026. A Polish linguist with 30 years of experience reported an offer of $15 per hour in r/Meridial on 3 Aug 2026. Geography also causes large pay gaps. A contributor noted in r/Meridial on 26 Apr 2026 that contributors in Africa received about $6 per hour, while contributors in Europe or Canada earned closer to $20 per hour on the same project.
Meridial pays for every minute, which matters
Meridial compensates contractors for every minute spent on a project. You track your hours using the Hubstaff desktop application. Meridial pays contributors every two weeks. Unlike per-task platforms, Meridial pays for onboarding, reading guidelines, and attending training calls. That pay structure protects your time during setup.
Even so, you should treat the public job board cautiously. The number to judge is the rate in your project invitation. Do not quit anything or turn down other work on the strength of a listing showing $65 per hour.
Meridial jobs: what 827 listings actually tell you
Meridial hosts its public job board on Greenhouse under the board name agency. On 2 Nov 2026, the board showed 827 open listings. Language & Linguistics led with 390 listings. Business & Professions listed 115, Sciences listed 63, and Engineering & Technology listed 58. Coding had 57 listings, while Finance & Mathematics and Medical/Healthcare had 36 each. Law accounted for 10. Geographically, 171 roles were in the US, UK, Canada, or Australia, with 130 in the US. Another 196 listings were tagged as Worldwide Remote.
These postings do not represent immediate hiring needs. Of the 827 listings, 757 (92%) were first published before May 2026. The oldest active listings date back to April 2025. Meridial uses these listings as standing talent pools rather than active project openings. An application places you into a database of pre-screened contractors. A project invitation may or may not follow later. This system explains why submitted applications can sit Under Review for weeks.
Invisible Technologies jobs vs Meridial jobs
Invisible Technologies hires its regular salaried staff through separate corporate postings. Those employee positions include internal recruiters and platform software engineers. All independent contractor AI training work runs under the Meridial marketplace instead.
To evaluate a posting on the board, check three specific details:
- The department: Core AI training tasks sit in specialist fields like Coding, Sciences, or Law. Outsourced operational roles like payroll or customer support sit in general business categories.
- The pay format: Check whether the listing carries the generic shared band of $6 to $65 per hour or its own rate line. Unique roles, such as select legal or engineering contracts, state their own distinct ceilings.
- The location tag: Confirm whether the post specifies your country or Worldwide Remote. Country tags control your eligibility, and geographic location directly influences the final rate offered in your project invitation.
How Meridial screening works

Meridial uses a multi-step screening sequence before assigning paid project work:
- Profile registration. You build a profile and complete a brief confirmation step.
- English assessment. Hallo administers an English test that covers reading, listening, writing, and speaking. You hear the listening prompt once.
- Psychometric assessment. You complete a reasoning or psychometric test.
- Domain assessment. The test matches your specialty. One JavaScript applicant reported multiple-choice questions followed by an AI interview on Hallo. Language candidates must take a second-language test. Some roles require a 30-minute interview or live assessments.
- Pool matching and project exams. Meridial places passing applicants into a talent pool. You may receive an email survey for a specific project, followed by project exams. One contributor on r/AiTraining_Annotation on 18 Apr 2026 read 120 pages of instructions for a three-part exam, then received the exact same exam again.
- Document verification. Contributors name Jumio for identity verification using a live face scan with limited attempts. You then submit address verification, bank details, and tax forms, including a W-8BEN for non-US contractors.
- Onboarding. You sign a Statement of Work. You receive a Meridial Google account and access to Google Chat. You must install Hubstaff on a Windows or Mac desktop to track billable hours.
Address and identity verification is the most common place where applicants get stuck. Contributors on r/Meridial on 3 Oct 2026 reported waiting weeks for manual address approvals. Another on r/Meridial on 17 Oct 2026 burned all verification attempts when the software misread an ID. Proctored exams may also require your webcam, microphone, and desktop screen sharing.
Use three practices to pass screening quickly. Use a passport for identity verification. Ensure your address document matches your profile text character for character. Secure a Windows or Mac computer before you apply, because a Chromebook user reported on 29 Oct 2026 that Hubstaff cannot track time on ChromeOS.

What Reddit says about Meridial
Reddit discussions skew heavily toward applicants facing obstacles. Contractors working steadily rarely post updates.
The good reports come from people who got through
Contributors who complete screening confirm that Meridial pays as promised. One US generalist with a bachelor's degree posted on r/Meridial on 8 April 2026. They applied in January, waited months, passed an assessment in March, and secured six projects within three weeks. Meridial compensated them for every minute spent on guidelines, calls, and training. Their lowest offer was $20 an hour. They tracked time via Hubstaff and received biweekly pay without delays.
Most complaints are about getting stuck, not about pay
Most negative threads describe onboarding bottlenecks rather than unpaid wages. One applicant on r/Meridial on 25 May 2026 waited weeks for manual address review, only to have both address and a passed skill check flip to failed. A thread on r/Meridial on 3 October 2026 showed multiple applicants blocked by address verification. On r/Meridial on 17 October 2026, an Indonesian applicant exhausted all identity checks when the system flagged their valid document as expired.
Cleared contractors still face workflow gaps. A contributor on r/Meridial on 14 October 2026 completed onboarding for RLHF projects but found zero tasks available. Project volume can also prove fleeting. A poster on r/AiTraining_Annotation on 13 July 2026 noted short projects where extensive assessments yielded only one or two tasks. On r/AiTraining_Annotation on 18 April 2026, an applicant passed a three-part exam after studying 120 pages of documentation, only to receive the exact same exam again. Contributors on r/Meridial on 25 September and 21 October 2026 reported locked Google accounts during a migration from Slack to Google Chat. These onboarding halts led to threads on r/Meridial on 23 and 28 October 2026 asking whether anyone actually receives pay.
Where you live sets the rate
Pay varies widely by location for identical work. A thread on r/Meridial on 26 April 2026 reported workers in Africa earning $6 per hour, while workers in Canada or Europe earned $20 per hour for the same project. On r/Meridial on 3 August 2026, a Polish linguist with 30 years of experience received an offer of $15 per hour after onboarding errors split their name and misrecorded their degree.
Two warnings
Watch out for referral schemes. Posts on r/naijaremote on 12 October 2026 offered private referral links through direct messages. The 8 April poster reported there was no referral programme at the time, so treat referral DMs with suspicion.
Never rent or buy an account. A post on r/Opportunities_Kenya on 7 August 2026 advertised taskers for Meridial accounts. Account renting breaks platform terms. The account holder controls your payouts and can take your earnings.
Meridial vs micro1 and Mercor: the same roles, side by side

This comparison puts matching roles side by side. We pulled each rate from Skillora's feed on 2 Nov 2026. The Meridial column lists the posted range from its Greenhouse job board. The columns for micro1 and Mercor show the published pay band from one live listing each. Every micro1 and Mercor rate links to the live listing. Use these figures to compare what each platform pays for the same domain expertise before you apply.
The table shows clear trade-offs across platforms. Mercor offers higher pay floors for sciences, coding, law, and medicine. In contrast, micro1 delivers the highest ceilings. Law reaches $400, M&A reaches $300, and physics reaches $200, though chemistry and biology start lower at $45. Languages are the one domain where Meridial's $65 ceiling holds up against rivals. Generalists also earn more on micro1 and Mercor than on Meridial.

2. Mercor: typical $60 to $90, top $450
The Mercor job board contains 298 listings and provides the highest typical floor in our feed. Every listing carries geographic restrictions. Most roles accept applicants only from the US, UK, and Canada. Rates reach up to $450 per hour for a US Oncologist. Read our Mercor review to see how its AI interview screening works.
The rest of the field
- Alignerr lists 557 active roles with typical pay between $40 and $75 per hour, reaching up to $400. About 96% of its listings accept contractors from any country. The platform supports two different payment models. Read our Alignerr review to learn more.
- DataAnnotation and Outlier pay no referral fees to Skillora. Both platforms host variable task pools and subject matter roles. You can compare their workflows in our DataAnnotation review and our Outlier review.
- Handshake AI sets each listing's ceiling by degree. Read our full breakdown in our Handshake AI review.
- AfterQuery is a YC-backed platform for subject matter experts that holds a 2.5 Trustpilot rating across 95 reviews.
For language specialists, Meridial's $65 ceiling remains competitive. micro1 lists its German Language Expert role at $30 to $65 per hour. Mercor caps linguistic listings at $50 per hour. For US professionals in accounting, sciences, coding, medicine, and law, Meridial's best case is roughly where matching Mercor listings start. Matching Mercor listings start at $60 to $110, while micro1 ceilings for those roles run $70 to $400.

Is Meridial worth it?
Language specialists should apply. Meridial features 390 language listings across 110+ languages. Rates reach $65 per hour and match rival platforms. People outside the US should apply if they need worldwide-remote roles. Meridial offers 196 worldwide-remote positions. US generalists should apply if they want work at about $20 per hour with paid onboarding. Mergers and acquisitions attorneys should apply for contracts paying up to $200 per hour.
US accountants, scientists, engineers, nurses, physicians, and attorneys should look elsewhere first. Meridial caps most of these roles at $65, attorneys at $75, and physicians at $120. Meridial's best case is roughly where matching Mercor listings start, while micro1 offers higher ceilings.
Apply to Meridial as a pool you sit in, not as your plan. Over 90 percent of listings behave as standing talent pools rather than immediate project openings. Screening delays and manual reviews can leave you waiting for weeks without work. Complete the assessments, pass verification, and wait for project invitations. In parallel, apply to two or three other marketplaces, including micro1 and Alignerr.
Verdict
Meridial is legitimate. Invisible Technologies backs the platform, issues payments biweekly, and compensates contractors for every minute worked. A job listing cannot tell you your rate or whether work will arrive. You learn both details only after screening and identity verification.
For US professionals, Meridial offers lower earning potential than rival sites. Meridial's best case is roughly where matching Mercor listings start, while micro1 listings reach higher ceilings. Apply to those platforms first.
Meridial earns a place in the queue for language work and worldwide access. Its $65 hourly ceiling matches micro1 for language roles and sits above Mercor's flat $50. Submit an application after securing spots on higher-paying boards.
