What Mercor is

Mercor is a San Francisco talent marketplace that places domain experts on contract work for frontier AI labs. The labs need doctors, lawyers, bankers, engineers, scientists and writers to produce and grade the material their models learn from. Mercor recruits those experts, screens them once, and matches them to projects.

Most listings never name the client. Your contract is with Mercor and the lab stays anonymous. What the listings do publish is the rate, and Mercor rates sit at the top of this feed: expert contracts regularly post above $100 an hour, and its contractor network pays out weekly for hours logged.

The work is remote and asynchronous. You are matched based on your profile and interview score rather than applying into a queue, so the screening step carries more weight here than on any other marketplace in this feed.

live listings publishing a rate

Computed from Mercor’s own published rates on the live feed, not from survey estimates. 5 further listings price per task or per study; those show the fee as published instead of a made-up hourly figure.

Mercor publishes an hourly rate on nearly every listing, which is not the norm in this market. Rates track scarcity: generalist evaluation work starts near the bottom of the range, and expert contracts in medicine, law, finance and senior engineering post several multiples higher. Payouts run weekly.

Who Mercor hires

Mercor hires for depth in a profession, not for AI skills. The busiest verticals in its listings: physicians and medical specialists, attorneys, finance professionals, senior software engineers, and PhDs across the sciences. Generalist writing and evaluation roles exist too, at lower rates.

The pattern in who gets matched: years of real practice beat credentials alone, and credentials beat enthusiasm. A practising radiologist or a staff engineer clears the bar faster than a strong generalist, because scarce judgment is the product Mercor sells.

How Mercor screens you

Mercor screens once, upfront, with a roughly 20-minute AI interview. It asks about your background, then pushes into how you reason inside your own field. The recording and transcript are scored and attached to your profile, and every project match reads from that score.

Retakes are allowed, but the first attempt is the one to prepare for. Candidates fail by narrating their resume instead of explaining their thinking. The interview rewards people who can walk through a decision the way they would teach it: what they considered, what they ruled out, and why.

Practise the Mercor screen before you take it

Skillora runs the same format: a domain interview with an AI interviewer, followed by feedback on how you explained your reasoning. Take it as many times as you want before the one that counts.
