SME Careers' own help centre warns that completing onboarding "does not guarantee an immediate placement," even after you pass an AI interview, complete an exam, verify your identity on Deel, and join Discord.

Is SME Careers legit? Yes. SME Careers is the expert talent arm of SuperAnnotate, an AI data firm founded in 2018. The company announced a $36 million Series B in November 2024 backed by NVIDIA and Databricks Ventures, with Dell Technologies Capital adding $13.5 million in July 2025. It pays contractors weekly through Deel.

Senior professionals should note three catches before applying:

  1. Ceilings hide the floor. 2,185 of 2,219 hourly postings show only an "Up to" rate. Your actual rate appears on your project invitation card.
  2. Rates vary by country. A Financial QAL ceiling is $90 per hour in the US, but $20 in India.
  3. The tracker cuts off fast. Hourly projects use Insightful, which marks your time idle and unpaid after two minutes without keyboard or mouse activity.

This review covers SME's pay rates, the 264 roles on its board, screening, contractor feedback on Reddit, its referral programme, and how pay compares to micro1, Mercor, and Alignerr.

Disclosure: Skillora participates in the SME Careers referral programme. If you apply through Skillora and start working, SME pays Skillora a commission. This costs you nothing. It does not alter any figure in this review. Skillora may also earn referral fees from micro1, Mercor, and Alignerr. You can browse every SME Careers role in our feed.

Is SME Careers legit? What checks out and what does not

Yes, SME Careers is legitimate. It is backed by established venture capital and pays contractors through recognized compliance platforms. Passing screening, however, does not guarantee paid tasks.

Who owns SME Careers?

SuperAnnotate owns and operates SME Careers as its expert talent platform. Brothers Vahan Petrosyan and Tigran Petrosyan founded SuperAnnotate in 2018. Vahan Petrosyan completed PhD research in image segmentation at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden before starting the company.

What checks out:

  • Institutional backing: SuperAnnotate announced a $36 million Series B in November 2024. Socium Ventures led the round with participation from NVIDIA and Databricks Ventures. Dell Technologies Capital added $13.5 million in July 2025, bringing the Series B total to $50 million.
  • Formal contracting: Contracts and payments run through Deel. The process requires signed independent contractor agreements and identity verification (KYC).
  • Clear platform rules: SME publishes an open help centre with 47 articles detailing its payment cycles and grading policies.
  • Human hiring decisions: SME states that a human reviewer is involved in every final interview decision.
  • Interview privacy: SME does not use interview recordings to train AI models, nor does it share them with clients. Support deletes recordings within 30 days upon email request.

What does not:

  • No placement guarantee: Completing onboarding does not guarantee immediate work. Qualified specialists wait in a talent pool until matching projects open.
  • Ceiling-only pay listings: Postings advertise maximum ceilings ("Up to $X/hr") without minimum floors. Only one US posting lists a floor.
  • Location-based rate drops: SME changes pay rates based on country. Many roles carry lower ceilings outside the US.
  • Reports of automated support: Several contributors report support replies felt templated or AI-generated when inquiring about missing project work.
  • Impersonator scams: Third-party scammers impersonate brands in this sector. Apply only at sme.careers. SME never charges applicants fees, and money never flows from you to them.

How much does SME Careers pay?

SME Careers pay by country: same role, different hourly ceiling in the US and India
Financial QA Lead posts up to $90 in the US and up to $20 in India.

The SME Careers job board lists 2,220 open postings across 102 countries. These postings represent 264 distinct roles. Exactly 223 postings are open to US residents across 140 distinct roles.

Pay numbers vary widely by field. For US listings, the median ceiling is $55 per hour. The middle half of US postings ranges from $30 to $75 per hour. At the top of the pay scale, Medical Doctor (Specialist) pays up to $150 per hour.

Several other US positions offer ceilings between $100 and $120 per hour:

The number on the listing is a ceiling

Public listings do not promise these exact numbers. Out of 2,219 hourly postings across the platform, 2,185 show only a ceiling. Only 1 of the 223 US postings shows a pay floor.

When you apply, you submit an expected hourly rate up to $500. You may also select "Prefer not to say". You get a default hourly rate.

Each project sets its own actual rate. You see this figure on the project invitation card before you accept work. Official documentation notes that project rate changes can only increase, taking effect the next day.

Always check the hourly rate on the invitation card. If the rate falls below your minimum, withdraw. Withdrawing from an invitation carries no penalty.

Same job, different country

SME Careers ties pay rates to geography. Across the platform, 63 roles post different pay ceilings for different countries. Signed-in candidates see the rate assigned to their country.

The pay gap between regions is steep:

  • Financial QAL: $90 per hour in the US versus $20 in India
  • Economics QAL: $90 per hour in the US versus $20 in India
  • Chemical Engineer: $100 per hour in the US versus $40 in India
  • Attorney and Lawyer: $40 to $120 per hour across 39 countries

A few technical roles offer identical ceilings worldwide. Mechanical Engineer lists at $70 per hour in both the US and India. Python Engineer lists at $60 per hour in both countries.

Location policies surprise some workers. One contributor outside the US and UK posted on r/AiTraining_Annotation on 14 Sep 2026 about their experience. They reported applying for a Medical QA Lead role advertised at up to $95 per hour. After passing the interview and assessment, their Deel contract screen showed a generic Data Trainer title at $4.00 per hour based on local market rates. Their post advised candidates to verify the on-screen rate before requesting a contract.

US applicants face less rate shrinkage than international applicants. US residents see some of the highest ceilings on the board.

The 2-minute rule: when SME Careers stops paying

SME Careers 2-minute rule: which Insightful time categories are paid
Only Active Time is paid. Over 2 minutes without input is Idle.

SME Careers tracks hourly work with a desktop tool called Insightful. You must work from one device only. Insightful logs your screen activity, and SME pays only for Active Time.

Active Time includes three statuses: Productive, Neutral, and Unreviewed. SME does not pay for time marked as Idle or Unproductive. If you do not touch your keyboard or mouse for more than two minutes, Insightful marks your session as Idle automatically. Idle time pays zero.

Unproductive time also pays nothing. Insightful flags background apps like Spotify, social media, YouTube, and unapproved AI tools as Unproductive. You can only use tools like Gemini or Perplexity if your specific project allows them. While the timer runs, Insightful can capture screenshots, screen recordings, URLs, and application names. Random verification checks may review these records. If you forget to run your timer, an admin must manually restore the hours. You must open a support ticket with your project name, date, missing hours, and an explanation.

This setup penalizes senior knowledge work. Real expertise requires reading, thinking, and reviewing complex files. A lawyer reading a forty-page contract or a physician studying an imaging scan can easily go two minutes without moving the mouse. Insightful marks that deep analysis as unpaid idle time.

Ask questions before you accept an hourly contract. Ask the project team inside Discord how they handle reading and review time. Then, record your own hours independently during your first two weeks. Compare your personal log against your weekly Deel payout statement. If the project classifies your reading time as idle, you will catch the shortfall immediately.

SuperAnnotate jobs: what the 264 roles ask for

SuperAnnotate categorizes its 264 roles across several distinct families. Most listings sit under contract terms (2,152 postings) and offer remote work (2,218 postings). Job function tags reflect the core tasks: writing appears on 1,505 postings, training on 1,227, and research on 712. Technical areas follow, with 357 tags for engineering, 206 for QA, 153 for healthcare, 92 for legal, and 75 for finance.

Language roles form the largest single category. SuperAnnotate posts Language Experts across dozens of languages. Entry-level generalist roles attract massive pools of applicants. The US English Language Expert role caps pay at $25 per hour and drew 3,577 applicants.

Subject matter roles carry higher rates and smaller applicant pools. Quality Assurance Leads review and quality-check completed work. The Financial QAL role pays up to $90 per hour. Technical management roles pay more. The Data Scientist Team Lead listing caps pay at $110 per hour. The Python (ML-Focused) Team Lead ceiling reaches $120 per hour.

Rubric Design specialist listings were posted on 29 September 2026. These listings pay near the top of the platform. The Legal & Compliance Specialist (Rubric Design) role reaches $120 per hour. The STEM & Technical Specialist (Rubric Design) and Finance & Accounting Specialist (Rubric Design) listings each pay up to $100 per hour. The Healthcare Specialist (Rubric Design) listing offers up to $100 per hour and drew 916 applicants.

SME Careers also runs specialized safety and technical tracks. September 2026 postings added AI safety audit listings, including a CBRN Specialist role paying up to $100 per hour to evaluate chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear risks. In engineering and hard sciences, a Civil Engineer tops out at $100 per hour, while a Physicist caps at $70 per hour.

Applicant volume drops fast as skill requirements rise. While 3,577 candidates applied for the $25 English role, only 43 people applied for Medical Doctor (Specialist) at up to $150 per hour. Just 7 candidates applied for Radiologist at up to $120 per hour. Verifiable credentials are your primary moat against crowded applicant queues.

How SME Careers screening works

  1. Account setup: Create an account and submit the Data Trainer form. Upload a CV as a PDF up to 5 MB, select your country, add optional LinkedIn details, and state your expected hourly rate.
  2. Job application: Apply to a specific role. You submit one application per job posting.
  3. AI interview: Complete a recorded 15-minute video interview on a desktop. The AI waits 5 to 6 seconds after you stop speaking. Using notes, Google, or ChatGPT is detectable and causes disqualification.
  4. Grading: SME grades interviews in 1 to 2 business days. An AI summary assists, but a human participates in every final decision.
  5. Attempts: You get one interview per job. You receive a retake only if the platform marks your result as Needs Retake. Incomplete technical sessions do not count against your limit.
  6. Qualification exam: Some roles require an external assessment. SME pays for certain exams once your contract is active.
  7. Recruiter review: Staff review your profile and CV. Missing a scheduled recruiter call without notice can end your process.
  8. Onboarding: Sign the Deel contractor agreement, pass identity verification, and verify your Discord account.
  9. Project invitation: SME sends project invites showing the hourly rate and an expiration date. Popular projects may place you on a waitlist.
  10. Bootcamp: You enter a paid training period. Failing the bootcamp drops you from that project only.
  11. Production: You start active paid work as an annotator, quality assurance lead, auditor, or trainer.

Passing is not placement

Completing onboarding makes you eligible for matching, but SME documentation states it does not guarantee an immediate placement. There is no fixed timeline. Openings depend entirely on active client projects.

Several workers passed screening only to wait indefinitely. One contributor waited 92 days after qualifying without receiving a project, as shared on r/AiTraining_Annotation on 21 Jul 2026. Another contributor reported selection for four postings over a year with zero tasks assigned on r/AiTraining_Annotation on 30 Oct 2026. A worker on r/WFHJobs on 18 May 2026 signed contracts and received a start date before communication stopped entirely.

Prepare for the interview like a real one

Concrete examples beat general statements. You can practise a timed AI interview on Skillora's mock interview page. Check our guide on AI training platform screening to see how attempt rules compare across rival platforms.

How SME Careers pays you

SME Careers tracks hours on a weekly cycle running Monday to Sunday. SuperAnnotate pays approved earnings the following Friday through Deel. Your payout arrives in one to three days, depending on your Deel transfer method. Weeks with no approved earnings produce no payout.

Your country must be supported by Deel to apply. SME Careers greys out unsupported countries on the application form.

You can generate three earning types: project, exam, and referral. SuperAnnotate pays only approved earnings. Every line item displays one of five statuses: Pending, Under review, Approved, Rejected, or On Hold. If a reviewer makes no decision on an Under review item by the Friday after that week, the system moves it to On Hold.

Exam pay follows a different timeline. When an exam pays candidates, SME Careers releases the funds about ten days after you complete your Deel contract. That payout requires a signed independent contractor agreement and completed KYC identity verification.

No Reddit thread in the examined sample reported unpaid wages for approved work. User complaints focus on waiting periods, empty project queues, and automated support rather than withheld pay. Review the full policy in the SME Careers weekly payouts documentation.

What SME Careers Reddit threads say

A search across Reddit reveals 97 threads mentioning SME Careers or SuperAnnotate over the past year. Of those 97 discussions, 36 contained referral links or affiliate pitches. One account reposted the same referral list in r/AiTraining_Annotation roughly weekly from March to November 2026. You should treat upbeat posts carrying sign-up links as advertisements.

The good reports

Positive commentary does appear, though posters qualify their praise. A referrer on r/WFHJobs on 5 Dec 2025 confirmed that SME Careers is real. That contributor reported that language experts usually earn $20 to $40 per hour. The same post noted that the platform offers no guarantee of work. Across the entire 97-thread sample, no contributor reported unpaid wages for approved work.

The complaints are about waiting, not wages

Worker complaints center on delays, silent queues, automated grading, and unresponsive support. Several contributors report they pass initial hurdles only to sit in an empty project queue.

Automated grading draws sharp criticism from candidates. On r/WFHJobs on 17 Mar 2026, a contributor described failing a bilingual bootcamp graded entirely by AI. The contributor spotted more than five errors, while the automated answer key recognized only one. Many test-takers failed the same assessment alongside them. On r/AiTraining_Annotation on 9 Sep 2026, a Mercor biology expert repeatedly failed onboarding assessments. That contributor felt the unpaid screening tests functioned as free task work, while help tickets generated only automated responses.

Platform bugs also trap applicants in loops. One user on r/AiTraining_Annotation on 30 Mar 2026 entered an interview loop after completing Deel onboarding. The jobs list kept demanding a new interview, and a repeat interview was logged as a second attempt.

Support responsiveness is another frequent target. A candidate on r/WFHJobs on 22 Apr 2026 reported finding no work after finishing interviews. That person submitted a formal request to delete their personal data and received no response. SME documentation states that SME deletes interview recordings within 30 days of a request emailed to support@sme.careers. When onboarding stalls, several contributors say support replies felt automated.

The SME Careers referral programme

SME Careers runs two referral paths.

Platform members generate a personal link through their dashboard (SME referral guide). You earn 7% of your referral's weekly earnings for as long as they work on the platform. SuperAnnotate calculates this payout two weeks after each earning period closes. Your referral must click your link when they apply. Support cannot credit a referral later.

Non-members can apply for a separate Network Referrer partner account. Partners earn commission rates set in their partner agreement, plus onboarding bonuses. SuperAnnotate pays individual partners through Deel. Partners create job-specific referral links and share them across job boards and messages. This option allows partners who never work on the platform to earn commission on the experts they refer.

That is why so many SME Careers posts on Reddit and job boards carry a link.

Skillora participates in the SME Careers referral programme. If you apply through our links and complete billable work, SME pays Skillora a commission. This arrangement costs you nothing. Your pay rate remains the same regardless of which link you use. If a friend introduced you to the platform, use your friend's link instead. Support will not link accounts retroactively.

SME Careers vs micro1, Mercor and Alignerr

SME Careers pay ceiling compared with micro1, Mercor and Alignerr pay floors
SME's highest posted rate against rivals' lowest, US listings, 5 Nov 2026.

SME Careers advertises pay ceilings. Rivals post pay ranges with floors. So compare SME's maximum rates against rival starting rates.

The table below contrasts US roles across each platform.

FieldSME Careers (US ceiling)micro1Mercor or Alignerr
AttorneyAttorney and Lawyer (up to $120); Legal Expert (up to $115)Lawyer ($100 to $170); Litigation Associate Attorney (BigLaw) ($140 to $400)Mercor Legal Expert (J.D./LL.B.) ($100 to $150)

PhysicsPhysicist (up to $70)Physics Expert (PhD / Postdoc) ($100 to $200)Alignerr Physicist, PhD ($90 to $120)

The numbers reveal a clear gap. micro1's typical legal floor ($100) sits near SME's typical legal ceiling ($115). The micro1 and Alignerr physics listings in the table start above SME's Physicist ceiling.

Overall US medians confirm this trend. SME postings show a median ceiling of $55 per hour. Rivals offer higher baselines. micro1 lists 394 US jobs with a median floor of $50 and a median ceiling of $87.50. Mercor lists 334 US postings with a median range of $60 to $85. Alignerr lists 539 US postings with a median range of $40 to $80.

Toloka's Mindrift also scales ceilings by country, but pays per approved task without tracking hours. Professionals asking is Mindrift legit should note that slow work reduces their effective rate.

SME Careers retains specific advantages. The platform has a wide catalogue of AI safety, rubric design, and language roles. Senior specialists in law, medicine, finance, and physics will usually find higher posted rates on micro1 and Mercor. Apply to micro1 and Mercor in parallel. Read our micro1 review, Mercor review, and Alignerr review to see how their screening processes work.

Is SME Careers worth it?

SME Careers fits US specialists targeting Quality Assurance Lead (QAL), rubric design, and AI safety audit roles. It also fits language experts, and contractors who can wait weeks without a project.

Senior lawyers, physicians, finance experts, and physics PhDs who need income soon should apply elsewhere first. Competing platforms post explicit pay floors, while SME posts only pay ceilings. Rivals also offer higher top rates for those senior fields.

Follow these rules before you invest your time:

  • Apply to two or three platforms at once. Completing onboarding makes you eligible for matching, but docs state it does not guarantee an immediate placement. Apply to competitors like micro1 or Mercor so you do not sit in an unpaid queue.
  • Check the rate on the invitation card before accepting. Every project sets its own pay. If the card shows an unexpectedly low rate, withdraw without penalty.
  • Ask how reading time is tracked. Insightful marks your session idle after two minutes without mouse or keyboard activity. Ask project managers how reading contracts, charts, or scans is logged before you accept an assignment.
  • Log your own hours against payouts for the first two weeks. Record your active work independently. Compare your personal log against weekly payouts on Deel to confirm you receive pay for all approved hours.
  • Never pay anything to get work. Scammers impersonate real companies in this sector. Money must never flow from you to SuperAnnotate or SME Careers.

Verdict

Is SME Careers legit? Yes. SuperAnnotate operates the platform, backed by $50M in Series B funding from investors like NVIDIA and Dell Technologies Capital. Contracts and weekly payouts run through Deel. No contributor in our Reddit review reported unpaid wages for approved work.

The catches require clear eyes. SME Careers advertises pay ceilings rather than guaranteed floors, and ceilings for many roles drop outside the US. Insightful software logs two minutes without mouse or keyboard activity as unpaid idle time. That rule penalizes time spent reading long documents. Completing onboarding does not guarantee project placement. Some qualified applicants report waiting months without receiving a single task.

Apply for roles where your credentials put you in a small applicant pool, such as radiology or specialist medicine. Browse open SuperAnnotate jobs in our feed. Do not rely on one vendor. Run applications on micro1 and Mercor in parallel to protect your billable hours.
