How physician consulting works when the client is an AI lab

Physician consulting used to mean expert network calls and advisory boards. AI labs now buy the same thing at scale: an hour of clinical judgment from someone who practises. They pay physicians to test medical AI models, grade their reasoning and write the answers a careful clinician would give.

The work comes in three shapes. Standing pools you join once and get matched from, which stay open whether or not a project is running. Project contracts with a set scope, often a few weeks. And short paid pilots or surveys for pharma and research teams, measured in hours rather than weeks.

Unlike an expert network call, there is no client on the line. You work against a published hourly rate, and most contracts let you choose when. The tag on each card shows the weekly hours a listing states.

Physician consulting pay by type of work

Published hourly rates for each section on this page, computed from the open listings. Surveys and per-task studies publish no hourly rate.

AI Jobs for Physicians

AI jobs for physicians are not about building models. They pay you to judge them. You write hard clinical prompts, grade the model’s answer against current standards of care, and write the answer it should have given. Outdated guidance, missed contraindications and confident answers no clinician would sign are what you are hunting for.

This section holds the listings built around that work, including the standing physician pools. A pool is not a job opening: you apply once, pass the screen, and get invited to projects in your specialty as they start.

Remote Hospitalist Consulting Jobs

Hospital medicine has the most open physician seats in this feed. The projects build inpatient documentation and decision-support tools, so they need physicians who write H&Ps and discharge summaries every week. Internal medicine, family medicine and pediatric hospitalists all have tracks.

Most ask for current or recent inpatient practice. A locum schedule fits well: micro1 runs a track for locum tenens hospitalists, and most of these contracts state no fixed weekly hours.

Oncology, Hematology and Specialist Consulting Jobs

Specialists get the shortest and best-paid engagements. Oncology projects test how a model reasons about trial eligibility and treatment decisions. Cardiology and disease-area roles read charts or trial results for one condition and judge whether the evidence would change prescribing.

Many are US-only and ask for an active specialty practice, often with board certification. Some run as one- or two-week pilots for pharma research teams, and some are paid surveys of half an hour. Read the scope before you apply.

What the work looks like

A typical task is a clinical scenario, the model’s answer and a rubric. You score the answer, mark what is wrong or unsafe, and write the response a careful clinician would give, with the reasoning. Specialist projects add scenario writing: cases built so the obvious answer is wrong.

Check two things before you sign. Your employer’s outside-work policy, since many health systems require disclosure of paid consulting. And the confidentiality terms, which cover everything you see on the project. Never bring identifiable patient information into a task.

Physician consulting AI training jobs, answered

Is AI training real physician consulting?

It is hourly expert work under a contractor agreement, which is what physician consulting means in practice. The client is an AI lab or a healthcare AI company instead of an investor or a pharma brand team. The judgment you sell is the same.

What are the best AI jobs for physicians?

For pay, specialist projects in oncology and other fields that need an active specialty practice. For volume, hospital medicine and primary care, which have the most open seats. For flexibility, the standing pools, which invite you to projects that fit your schedule.

How does this compare with expert network calls?

Expert networks such as GLG and AlphaSights pay per call, often at a higher hourly rate, but calls are short and volume follows investor interest. AI training pays a published rate for longer, steadier blocks of work. Nothing stops you doing both.

Do I need a US license?

For some listings. Oncology, cardiology and pharma roles here are often US-only and ask for an active US practice. Several hospital medicine and pool listings are open in other countries; each card shows where a listing is open.

How many hours does physician consulting take?

Read the tag on each card. Stated loads range from a half-hour paid survey to a part-time weekly commitment on specialist projects. Many hospital medicine contracts state no weekly hours, so you choose.

How do I get hired?

Apply through the listing, pass the credential check, then an AI interview that walks through a clinical case. It rewards a committed assessment and plan, said out loud. Some specialist projects add a short paid trial task.

Other remote physician consulting work

AI training is one consulting market. These are the others physicians use, with the friction each one carries.

  • Expert networks. GLG, AlphaSights and Guidepoint book paid calls with investors and consultants. Strong hourly rates, short calls, lumpy volume and strict compliance rules.
  • Pharma and device advisory boards. Paid meetings and consulting for drug and device makers. In the US these payments are published under the Open Payments program.
  • Medical-legal consulting. Record review and expert opinions for attorneys. The highest rates on this list, with depositions and testimony as the price.
  • Healthcare consulting firms. Part-time clinical advisors for consultancies and health tech companies, usually found through your network rather than a job board.
  • Paid market research surveys. Short surveys from research firms. Easy and low commitment, with the lowest hourly value here.

The screen is where these roles are won

Every marketplace above screens with an interview or assessment in your own domain before assigning paid work. Run that interview with Skillora first and get feedback on how you explained your reasoning, not just on what you said.
