What physician reviewer jobs in AI training are

Physician reviewer jobs in AI training pay doctors by the hour to review clinical documentation. The records are real or realistic: H&Ps, progress notes, discharge summaries, FHIR data. The question is one you already ask on rounds. Is this note accurate, complete and supported by the record? More and more often, an AI model wrote the note, and your review is what it learns from.

The requirement that trips people up is recency. Most listings want current or recent practice: micro1’s hospitalist roles ask for inpatient work within the last two years, and Mercor’s documentation roles ask for a current practice. Board certification is usually listed as preferred rather than required, so read each listing.

You treat no one, there is no call schedule, and most contracts let you choose your hours. The work fits around a full clinical schedule, a reduced one, or the first couple of years after you step back, subject to your employer’s outside-work policy.

Physician reviewer pay by type of review

Published hourly rates for each type of review on this page, computed from the open listings. A listing counts in both rows when it fits both.

Medical Chart Review Jobs (Remote)

Chart review jobs for physicians in this feed share one task: read clinical documentation and judge it. Is the history supported by the record? Does the plan follow from the assessment? Is anything clinically significant missing? You flag each error by severity and write the rationale.

Hospital medicine leads, because inpatient notes are where documentation AI is being built first. Primary care, pediatric and specialty roles appear too. Some specialty roles read charts for a single condition and label how likely the disease is, which is closer to research abstraction than a quality audit.

Utilization Review Physician Jobs (Remote)

None of these is a utilization review job in the payer sense. Nobody’s claim depends on your call. They are the listings that ask for utilization review, documentation improvement or audit experience, or that ask you to judge whether care was appropriate. If you have done UR, these are where it counts.

The judgment transfers directly. Level of care, appropriateness and whether the record supports the plan are the same questions, asked of a chart an AI model will learn from. If you want payer UR work itself, the list near the bottom of this page covers where physicians find it.

What the work looks like

A case arrives with a record and a rubric. You read the documentation, compare it with the source data, and mark each error: missing, unsupported, inconsistent or clinically wrong. Then you write a short rationale a non-physician can act on. Senior reviewer roles also settle disagreements between reviewers and help write the guidelines.

Consistency is the skill being paid for. Apply the rubric the same way on the fortieth chart as on the first, and raise a gap in the guidelines with the project team rather than working around it in your notes.

Physician reviewer AI training jobs, answered

What does a physician reviewer do in AI training?

Reads clinical documentation, often written or summarised by an AI model, and judges it against the record and a rubric. You flag omissions, unsupported claims and clinical errors, rate their severity, and explain each call. Some roles add guideline writing and adjudication between reviewers.

Do I need to be currently practising?

For most listings, current or recent practice is the bar. micro1’s hospitalist roles ask for inpatient experience within the last two years, and Mercor’s documentation roles ask for a current practice. Requirements differ by listing, so check before you apply.

Is this the same as utilization review?

No. Utilization review decides whether a payer covers care. This work judges whether documentation is accurate and complete, and nobody’s coverage depends on it. UR, CDI and audit experience still help, and several listings name them as a plus.

Does physician reviewer work create malpractice exposure?

You treat no one, so no patient relationship forms. If you want certainty for your own policy, ask your malpractice carrier; it is a short question. Read the contractor agreement too, since projects that use de-identified patient data come with strict handling rules.

How much do physician reviewer jobs pay?

The pay table on this page shows the live published range for chart review and utilization-review work. Documentation roles tied to a practice setting, such as inpatient or primary care, sit near the top. Every rate comes from the listings themselves.

How do I get hired?

Apply through the listing, pass a credential check, then a screen. micro1 and Mercor run an AI interview that asks you to reason through a clinical case out loud. Answer like a consult note: a clear assessment and a committed plan. A long differential with no conclusion is the usual way to fail it.

Where physicians find utilization review and peer review work

If you want the payer side of review rather than AI training, these are the established routes.

  • Health plans. Physician reviewers and medical directors run medical necessity review, peer-to-peer calls and appeals. Remote, predictable, and the most common first non-clinical role.
  • Independent review organizations. Pay physicians per case for external appeals and peer review on behalf of payers and employers. Volume follows your specialty.
  • Your hospital’s utilization management team. Physician advisor roles reviewing level of care and medical necessity, often part time alongside clinical work.
  • IME and disability review companies. Structured record review and opinions for insurers, disability programs and workers’ compensation carriers. Get the fee per file in writing.
  • Medical-legal chart review. Attorneys pay physicians to review records in malpractice and injury cases. Higher rates, more friction, and possible testimony.

The screen is where these roles are won

Every marketplace above screens with an interview or assessment in your own domain before assigning paid work. Run that interview with Skillora first and get feedback on how you explained your reasoning, not just on what you said.
